Video System Shutting Down and Producing Event ID 41

    Hi

I have a PC which appears to shutdown the video system only which produces an Event ID 41 but DOES NOT REBOOT THE PC. To get the PC video up and running I do a manual reboot by pressing my PC's RESET button. I can be accessed over the network with no trouble whilst my video is down and before I press RESET which doesn't sound like my PC is rebooting or even trying. It still produces an Event ID 41 though which is described by Windows as follows: "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."

No! It hasn't been rebooting or shutting down. ONLY the video. This has happened every day since Tuesday this week (13th) and has happened twice today up to now and curiously, I'm not generally looking at the PC when it happens. I think I saw it happen once first thing in the morning when it happened -- BUT IT HAS NEVER REBOOTED OR SWITCHED OFF. I stress again that only the screen goes off and a manual reset gets everything up and running again.

I am at a loss as what's wrong but it could be almost anything although I do feel it's hardware related. I need help in sorting this out and I'm appealing to all, if you have any possible ideas then PLEASE get back to me. Any further info required I'll willingly provide but PLEASE, SOMEONE please help.

Do a System Restore to a time before this happened.
Or press the Windows Key+X and choose Device Manager, expand Display. Right click the nVidia Display adapter, choose Properties/Driver/Roll Back driver, to a driver that was working.
Or Download the latest driver for your video card: Drivers | GeForce

    Hi spunk

I wish it were as simple as that. I installed the latest drivers a few days ago. I was getting the problem before replacing them and also since; I'm wondering what wonders my PC has in store for me today. I can't remember what file it was but I found a file on the BSOD forum which compiles a series of files about BSOD problems. On using that I found a file which stated quite clearly that I had a hardware fault but it didn't say what that hardware was so I'm really no further forward from there. No one on that forum is interested in helping me 'cos I don't get a BSOD - just a black screen! Nevertheless, thanks very much for your response. I guess I shall have to find another forum as well as this one, probably a Windows or Microsoft forum, to seek help on this.

    Tracey,

Manual resets or hardware power offs cause event #41.
For example, never ending rotating circles, hangs, freezes, etc. all may frustrate the most patient end users.
To start using the computer again typically requires a manual reset or hardware power off.

When there are manual power offs, BSOD, power outages, malfunctioning hardware these event viewer entries are seen.

See scenario #2 in this link:

Scenario 2: The computer is shut down by pressing and holding the power button

    Hi zbook

Maybe I'm not explaining this very well. I'm having to do a RESET because my video has died and left me with no picture of ANY description. Its the same when I come down in the morning before I switch on except in this case the PC is already on but my video has disappeared, gone. In this scenario the ONLY way to get video back is to do a RESET.

So I understand you correctly - are you saying that its not the failure of the video that is producing the Event 41 but the action of doing the RESET? If so I'm not entirely convinced but I will admit you could well be right. Still I will check next time it happens and I'm sure it will happen - I just never know when! However, assuming you are right then how do I find a solution? Surely, there's some way of working out what is happening and why the video has failed. I suppose the only way forward would be substitution, i.e. remove a video card from another working PC and see if that makes any difference in my PC. I could also swap over some monitors. But assuming the fault is still occurring after that, the only thing left as far as I am aware is the mobo and that's going to be expensive since it means a new mobo, CPU and memory (at present I have an LGA1150 mobo).

Something I have in mind to do later this morning is to recover a backup I made back on 6th July about three weeks before this all started and see if that makes any difference. I'm not particularly hopeful but you never know.

    Hi Everyone

Seems zbook knows what he's talking about. He was right seems I've been chasing the wrong problem all along. I have a video failure yes but it doesn't cause the Event 41 I thought it did and I've proved that to my satisfaction now. I'm just going to have to go away and have a think about where I go from here. From this point in I consider this thread to be closed -- but NOT solved -- yet!!!
