Open control panel, then open "devices and printers", See if your printer is selected as default. If not right click on it and select it as the default printer.
I have no problem printing PDF's from any of my 3 home computers. Another thing to try, remove your printer and reinstall it. making sure to select default printer

That menu you don't like? I don't like it either. But it's been with Windows 10 and 8 for, what, six years. Quit crying about it.
Don't like the frequent updates and the changes that they bring? Neither do I. So just disable them for as long as you can. And quit crying about it.
