Hell no, I am never ever using chkdsk again. That is what got me to the point I am at now.
That means there was a significant underlying problem.
Ever heard the proverb 'A bad workman blames his tools'?

Use a live boot disk as has been suggested and start by checking your disk.
HD Tune is on Kyhi's boot disk.

    Good luck.

    Oh yeah f14tomcat...

I can't recall, in Rufus, should the file system be set to NTFS or FAT32?

    Thank you,
    John

That question in Rufus is for the "Target" system so NTFS.

OK problem right off the bat...

    I downloaded "winpese-x64-14393_17.01.16.iso"

Burnt it to a USB drive using following setings:

Put USB drive into laptop, held down the "Assist" button (Sony Vio) has this feature. When option screen came up, chose boot from USB drive and received the following error message:

    ------------------------------------
    Secure Boot Failed
    Operating System is invalid
    ------------------------------------

When I look at the files on the USB drive, the following is what I see:

Size:	30.2 KB

What did I do wrong here?

    Thank you,
    John

PS - And why did it create three different drives on MY computer?

Disable secure boot in UEFI setup (if it's a UEFI system). Of it's BIOS system then you need to remake the USB flash drive specifying BIOS/MBR, or forget Rufus and use Diskpart so it will work no matter what you have:

Here is a manual (non-Rufus) procedure originally posted by @NavyLCDR that I recorded and saved (with slight modifications). I've used it many times now and it works under all boot conditions, UEFI/GPT/MBR or CSM/MBR.

    1. You already have the Kyhi Rescue ISO file you need.
    2. Insert the USB flash drive.
    3. Open a Administrator Command Prompt. It will say Administrator Command Prompt in the Title bar. Enter the following commands:
    4. diskpart
    5. list disk
    6. select disk # <- replace # with the actual disk number of the USB flash drive
    7. clean <- this will erase the disk selected above, make sure you selected the USB flash drive!
7a. If the flash drive shows as GPT then you need to convert it to MBR: convert mbr
    8. create part pri
    8a. sel part 1
    9. format fs=fat32 quick
    9a. assign
    10. active
    11. exit
    12. exit - and if the first Command Prompt was not an Administrator Command Prompt, exit that one too.
    13. Mount the ISO you downloaded. If you are using Windows 8 or 10, you only have to right click on it and click on mount. If you are using Windows 7, then you must use a program like WinCDEmu to mount the ISO file:
WinCDEmu - the easiest way to mount an ISO. And more...
    14. Copy all the files and folders from the mounted ISO file to the USB flash drive.

That's as simple as it gets. Between steps 7 and 8 you can enter: "select part 1" without quotes - but it should not be necessary.
Between steps 8 and 9 you can enter: "assign" without quotes - but it should not be necessary.

Here is more info from NavyLCDR on why this is the best way to do this:

"You already have the Kyhi Rescue ISO file you need"

    Hm...

I have none of the stuff that is shown on the DL page (in the pic with all the folders) at Windows 10 Recovery Tools - Bootable Rescue Disk.

You will once you get a good bootable USB working. That's pretty much what the desktop will look like. It's Windows 10 based so will be very familiar to you.
