A replacement motherboard with i7 CPU is more like £150 in the UK. I can't be sure that's the problem plus the laptop has been well used. I'll fiddle with it a bit longer but will probably invest the cash in a
new laptop having similar spec. Any recommendations?
Levono sells Models with same name different hardware so get the right specs.
Dell is reliable as is Acer and Toshiba.
Toshiba is more user friendly with support.

You can narrow down the brands to consider by reading this support review

You might also wish to check that any particular model is supported by Crucial.com - if they do not stock parts for it then you can ask the seller why.

I'm not interested in snazzy designs or laptops which are hard to upgrade and maintain. I've done a wide review and am tempted by a HP ProBook 450 G6 for c. £650. 8GB RAM, i5 CPU, 512GB SSD, Win 10 Pro, good interfaces, full HD IPS display etc

It will take 32gb, not a bad choice for a laptop. https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compa...probook-450-g6

What resolution display are you typically using on computers / television?

Generally full HD 1920x1080 but my desktop PC has a higher resolution monitor for photo editing.

The notebook displayed 15.6" HD anti-glare display (1366x768).
    Otherwise nice specs.

The HP ProBook 450 G6 on their UK store has a 1920x1028 IPS display

Update on the bust Dell laptop. I fired it up again today. It booted into Windows! I then ran the Dell diagnostics which almost finished the memory diagnostics then the screen started flickering and went off. I'm assuming there is a heat related issue with the GPU despite the motherboard and other temperature sensors reporting OK - nothing above 50C.
