What Microsoft has said and what they might do are two very different things, would not be the first company to change direction further down the road.
As far as the idea of a subscription cloud based OS, its not that far fetched an idea. There are lots of subscription models that work very well, versions of Office, cloud storage, mmo games, Tv etc.
Lets not forget all the big names are starting to push the idea of cloud hosted game streaming services, I see no reason why a sub based OS is not possible, even now you don't need a physical copy of Win10, just download it and buy a key from MS store. It could work similar to Sky tv packages.
But as I said, this is not a prediction, its the completely unsubstantiated musings of a Win10 user, so no need to start an argument, only Microsoft know for a fact where they are going with Windows (well, we hope).

If (and I stress IF) MS ever go down this route, it would be a supplementary scheme. You can buy or lease Office. I see no reason same could not apply but the cost level would have to be attractive. I could see a combo OS/onedrive deal eg lease OS, get 1TB cloud space (like leasing Office deal).

However, I do not see the base "purchased" licence deal ever changing as that would be commercial suicide. All the conspiracy theory talk suggesting people know the inside deal from MS is pure bovine excrement.

MS already has. O365, Business services, Office is a huge user base between multiple platforms.

I was talking about the operating system ONLY, not other software. Office/365 does not apply to me, as my university has provided me a lifetime subscription. I get free updates for life. . I'm just talking about the actual OS.

We are getting into crystal ball effect. I'm wondering about if I'm going to wake up next morning ! What will or will not MS call their OS or if there will be any should be last thing to wonder about.
It would take 8 minutes to find out if sun blew up, forever to find what MS might do.

You think by now they would have developed a Gestalt so you could link all your
    computers as one.

I so agree, Mike. . . . If it ever comes to where I start questioning Microsoft, I will permanently switch to OSX. . . I do have more experience with Windows, but it won't bother me to make the immediate switch to OSX. Both of my computer have AMD Processors, but with a little tweaking, I could make OSX run on AMD.

Part of your question was how they can make money. Like others said, MS makes plenty of money on other things.
As for Windows, MS does not need money from upgrading the OS. Ms gets money every time a new computer is sold with Windows. Also, a business pays for software assurance and volume licensing as a subscription. How do you think schools and business can offer Office for their employees/students.

Also, they make money from the ad's in the store apps and the data they collect from people who don't turn those features off. (most users don't know any better)

Switching to OSX is only a temporary solution, I think, because once MS will go cloud based OS, the others will follow

Microsoft is never moving to a cloud based OS. Google’s Chrome OS is onlyCloud Based for applications because it is developed off of Chromium/Chrome Browser. I moved to all Apple Devices over 6years ago, with the move to a Macbook Air running Mojave around three years ago.

You wouldn't happen to have a Mac Mini laying around that you aren't using, would you?
