Going to W10, need some advice.

Going to W10, need some advice.

    Hi,

Currently running W7 Pro32 bit MSI I5 laptop & use it mainly for managing our Retirement funds, Healthcare along with research, learning about what's going on in the world today. I'm a retired busn Mgr & have been using PC's since the early 80's: Commodore VIC 20, DOS DR DOS & all Win thru W7, Not a tech as I work above the hdwe & code on busn & marketing solutions.

1] W10 comes in a 32 bit version, if I go with it would I be able to use the 32 bit software on my W7 pc?
Word, Excel, Front pg (all 2003) along with Fireworks 2 are the programs I use most often.

2] If I go with std W10, 64 bit, I'll have to buy new software & lean all over again which will be very difficult given our current living situation.

3] I think the new OFFICE has ribbon menus. Q: Can I select ONLY the functions I use 20% of the time into a single ribbon, similar to the buttons I select for my menu bards in the old Word & Excel?

4] Which would be the better choice: Office 365 or Std Office?

I've numbered questions so when responding, please indicate the the #

Any advice you can give me will be of help & greatly appreciated.

    1. Although CPUs migrated to 64-bits years ago, many 32-bit applications are still running in their 64-bit personal computers.

    Hi,
If you have a ssd / solid state drive 64 bit os should be okay
This also assumes you also have 3gb's of memory too

Pretty cheap 2.5" ssd's are now days
    860 evo is dirt cheap
Just check out amazon 55.us for a 250gb....

99% of 32 bit software work just fine on a 64 bit windows. To use 64 bit you idealy need 4 gig or more of ram above 4 gig windows wont see the memory if its a 32 bit version

No, you won't. Your Office 2003 will install and run fine under W10, although there may be issues with Outlook (so I've read). No need to switch to a ribbon version unless you like it!

In keeping things simple, you can just as easy run 32-bit application on a 64-bit OS as you can 64-bit apps because the 64-bit OS has a 32-bit layer. What that means to you is there's no need to buy new software because it isn't "64-bit compatible". That also means you could still run Office 2010. However, being 2010 is old, there may be other issues where everything doesn't work, but that's more an issue of old software and Windows 10 compatibility than 32 vs. 64 bit.

That leads to another important issue... Windows 10 compatibility with your existing hardware / software. Personally Ii would take stock of what you have and really need and check to see if both hardware and apps are compatible with Windows 10. With hardware this would be checking for driver updates; for software, check to see if said software is compatible / supported under Windows 10. That could be patches, or new software releases.

In the end, you need to be prepared to make the necessary updates / upgrades needed should you move to Windows 10. Many people move to Windows 10 (or any new OS) and find themselves completely frustrated that their old hardware / software no longer works or functions properly on the new OS. This isn't an issue with the new OS, it's a compatibility where old hardware / software simply doesn't work on a new operating system. Just something to think about.

    Good luck.

    mngerhold,

Much thanks as Office 2003 Word & Excel are the programs I use most. Old Macromedia Fireworks 2 is next, followed by 2003 Front Pg. I use Thunderbird 68.0b5 (32-bit) rather than Outlook.

As to the ribbon situation, you mean I have the option to setup a "button menu" See image below:

There is no option to switch to the classic menu in Microsoft software that is currently in production. The Ribbon takes a bit to get used to, but it is actually more robust than the older menus.

    no button menu.

    bro67,

Thanks for the good tip. Too bad I cant go into a Big Box store and take Office 2019 or 360 for a test drive. Do you know of Big Box stores that may have a W10/Office I can test drive Office Ribbon?

Lack of a customizable ribbon will slow me down considerably. I have found thru decades of of diverse hands-on experience that most things today are slower now & I'm almost 80. Just try to get in touch with someone in a company who can answer a question about a complex product, service, or process.

I grew up & love tech but so much is done because it can be done or its cool. There's nothing cool about a Stryker Vehicle, A10 Warthog or a RPG, they just get the job done.

What's your take on several posts that W10 64 will run most 32 bit programs?
And what about W10 32 bit running 32 bit programs?

    Please stay in touch.

    Regards,
