laptop battery wont charge after latest update

there was a mandatory update that came out a few days ago but i only installed it today. everything was fine and i left my laptop. when i came back to it in the evening i noticed that the battery keeps going down even though it's plugged in. it went down from 100% to 50% in about 45 minutes, after that i turned it off to save what's left. it's the weekend here and the comp technician wont be able to come until monday so i thought i would ask here if there is anything i could try. thank you

With the laptop powered on, unplug the adapter from it. Hold down the shift key while you click on shutdown to shutdown the computer completely clean bypassing Windows 10 fast start up. After the laptop is completely powered off, plug the adapter back in. Do you see any indication of charging? If no, then you have a hardware failure. Does the power supply have any LEDs on it, and if so, is it lit?

    Just a quick chime in...

In addition to what @NavyLCDR mentioned, if the battery is removable then remove it when powered down, wait 20 seconds, re-insert and power-up.

How old is the Laptop? Do you have a spare charger?

Then it sounds like you have a hardware failure, including the possibility of a bad battery.

Is this a Dell (or HP) laptop? Both use a third centre wire in the charger plug to identify the charger. See...

...Dell laptops are particularly fussy about the charger they use. All Dell adapters have a central pin. This is not a power pin, rather it is a serial data line that is interrogated to determine the power supply's specs....
Genuine Dell laptop power supplies use the 1-Wire protocol to send data via the third wire to the laptop (about power, current and voltage ratings). The laptop will then refuse charging if the adapter does not meet requirements.[4]

Battery plugged in but not charging.

If so, it may be a coincidence that the charger's centre pin has just become damaged, or it may be that a required OEM 'ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery' driver has been replaced by a generic MS one.

    Removable battery?
If so, Have you tried another battery?
    Do you have another charger?

Try charging with the computer completely powered off.
