Hybrid shutdown causing my computer to hang when I start back up

    The actual question:
How can I find the log/error of what is causing this or what can I do to fix it.

    The issue:
I sent 3 different shutdown commands (1 at a time per boot) and 1 fails me which is needed for fast startup:

    Commands:

    1. shutdown.exe /t 0 /g
    2. shutdown.exe /t 0 /sg /f
    3. shutdown.exe /t 0 /s /hybrid

    What they do and did:

    1. Reboot and automatically login and lock (working as intended)
    2. Shutdown and automatically login and lock on next startup (working as intended)
    3. Hybrid shutdown with fast startup. This is the one that locks up my PC at boot. It makes it to the first Windows Logo screen and just stops. I have to hit the reset button (same as hold power button down).

    What I've tried:

    • Recreate the hibernation file: powercfg.exe /hibernate off && powercfg.exe /hibernate on
    • Rebooted and trying to make a clean boot up.
    • Looked through Event Viewer but only find the event that the computer was forcefully shut off. (not really sure what to look for)
    • I've already run DISM and SFC also.
    • Memory Diagnostics and no errors were detected.
    • Disk Check

    My Specs:
    Windows 10 x64 1903 - Build 18362.239
    Gigabyte: GA-970A-UD3
Processor: AMD FX 4100 Quad Core
    10 GB Memory

Hello, and welcome to Ten Forums.

You might test with Fast Startup turned off. Fast Startup can sometimes cause shutdown issues like this.

You can still have hibernate enabled and use hybrid shutdown.

Thank you for your quick response. This does boot up correctly but I want to use fast startup. Any idea why fast startup would cause my desktop to hang?

    There are 3 scenarios:

    1. Reboot computer because I need to reboot for reasons.
    2. Shutdown the computer in hybrid on a normal day which when I turn my computer back on the next day, it's back up and running quickly because it's using fast startup.
    3. Shutdown my computer after updates have been installed. I don't want to reboot so I shut down bypassing the hybrid shutdown so when I startup the next day, all updates are in place and I don't have to reboot again.

    What I did:
I turned off fast startup and then shutdown the computer. It started up fine. I then turned fast startup back on and shutdown then turned the computer back on and the issue is still present.

EDIT: I was using fast startup before and it was working fine. I need to find out what is cause this.

Fast Startup uses a cache like hibernate, so it will sometimes cause the hangup like that if something has changed than what was in the cache.

Sometimes turning off Fast Startup, restart, and turning on Fast Startup again afterwards will clear it up. Not always though as from your results.

Thank you... I have done so many things and just now completely shut down and unplugged for about 5 minutes and redid all power plan settings to default and made sure hibernation and fast startup are turned on. I shut down and the problem is still present.

This is baffling to me. I am thinking that it may be a driver issue so I will try to go through all of my drivers which will be a pain.

Usually, if you have a fast computer with Windows 10 installed on a SSD or NVMe, you won't notice any performance difference with Fast Startup turned off.

Yeah, that would be great but this is a non-profit organization and we do not have a lot of money for upgrading our hardware. I've setup our computers as optimal as I can and you will laugh but I am using 2 IDE Sata in Raid0 config but it is tons faster in raid.

Currently, I'm checking drivers and my bios settings.
I'm open for any other ideas other than a clean install. NO! lol

The only solution I know of is to turn off Fast Startup.

How much startup performance difference do you notice with it off?

    It was really slow.

At any rate, I reset the BIOS to default and then rebooted and it's working again. This at least lets me know WHERE the problem lies. It may have been a bad overclock. It was working fine and wasn't overclocked by much but I will investigate further. However, I am done here.

Thank you for your time sir.

    That's great news.

If you play any with the BIOS, it could be from something in the Boot settings.
