Disable "Group by" or set default to "(none)" in Windows 10 1903 ?

now ever since last years disastrous update that caused Data loss, i put off Feature updates as long as possible till i find there's no OS Breaking bugs (i shouldn't have-to do that a update shouldn't make the user fear data loss >_>)got lazy and eventually just let the update occur.

and i get introduced to their wonderful "we know better than you we'll force it down your throat" default grouping on the Downloads folder. now i know i can set it to "group by: (none)" to restore it to teh way it was, but it doesn't stick.

is there any known way at the moment (registry edit, GPO, 3rd party tool, etc) to make the default back to "none" ? (i've seen a few posts while trying to look on google about this and see people saying "Just accept it." "its better this way!" etc. My PC, my system i'd rather have it the way i had it.

Setting the view to your liking & then using Apply to folders from the Folder Options on the View ribbon should do the trick.

Apparenetly, in 1903, they've added a dedicated Downloads template --- prior to this, the Generic template was used by the Downloads folder. And, as you've noticed, it defaults to GroupBy DateModifed.

For some reason, my system did not behave this way until maybe a week after a fresh 1903 installation.

I don't suppose there would be a registry edit that maybe a user could run recurrently (in e.g., a scheduled batch file), so as not to endure the pain over and over again.

If you like, you can use the method in the tutorial below to set a default folder view and apply it to all folders.

@Brink, the tutorial is excellent but Microsoft keeps changing/removing the options. I am using version 1903 build no: 18362.535.
Always use details, without grouping, but they removed the "None" option.

    Hello mate,

Group by > (None) is only available if the current view has been grouped by something.

    Thanks Brink!!!

I got this problem a couple of days after the latest win10 update.

The folder view were grouped by date from the update and the (None) option were missing. Following your statement I were able group and then group (None).

    You saved my day.

For the Downloads folder, be sure to un-group the view in Explorer & then use Apply to Folders to make the ungrouped view is set as the default for both Explorer & dialogs.
