    Keith,
Using the first of your commands - 683.
Using the last of your commands - 231.

BTW Keith, I used properties for read only, because I couldn't see a way to get to the screen you showed.

I was afraid of that. The Read-only checkbox in the Folder Properties dialog is not a status indicator --- it's a tri-state switch which defaults to 'take no action" --- the gray square so many assume is a status indicator.

If you didn't understand what I meant by "add the Attributes column to a Detail view of the parent folder" in my pevious reply, you should have said so.
    1. Open File explorer to the folder containing your customized folder and select the Details layout.
    2. RIght-click on any column header and select More...Click image for larger version.

    3. Select and check Attributes, then repeatedly press Move up to bring it to the top of the list.

    Keith,

Apologies for not telling you re. Read only.

I have done what you said and now I have 148 folders with RD in the attributes column and 14 folders with D in the attributes column.

I might be jumping the gun but at the moment, I still can't customize the folders/change image/restore default.

Not sure what to suggest at this point other than the poosisbility of corrupt profile issues and creating a new user account to see if rhe same behavior persists.

    Did you consider these resets?

I have seen references in other threads to resetting the icon cache & the thumbnail cache and I wonder if either of these is relevant. The tutorials on these subjects are
Rebuild the Icon Cache - TenForumsTutorials
    Reset Thumbnail Cache - TenForumsTutorials
If you are concerned about side-effects then you could make a system image before trying them out.

I don't know if a Repair install [aka InPlace upgrade] will do any good or not. It will not do any hram.

    Best of luck,
    Denis

    Keith/Denis,

Many thanks for all you efforts.
I have tried Rebuilding Icon Cache/Thumbnail Cache and also tried sfc /scannow which came up clean.

I originally thought that this was something simple - obviously not !!!

Then I'd suggest the Repair install.

"sfc /scannow which came up clean" - You are not up to date then?

    Denis,

Not sure what you mean when you say "You are not up to date then"?

Those with the latest updates have found a problem with SFC reporting faults in Windows defender components.

So is your OS up to date - Version 1903 Build 18362.239? I think that the latest ISO has been updated to that Build so running a Repair install [linked above] would update you as well as check/replace components so would be more far reaching than normal. If so I would urge you to make a system image first.

    Denis,
Before I might possibly go down the Repair Install route, please see the following.

    This crossed my mind yesterday:

Before I moved to Windows 10 I was on Windows 7.
I backed up all my Music and Pictures (amongst other things of course).
All the folders in Music and Pictures were customised with selected images.
When I installed Windows 10, I copy/pasted Music/Picture folders into Win 10. The majority of folder images were retained but some had dropped off, leaving one or two images from within the folder on each folder.

Could this transition from Win 7 to Win 10 be anything to do with the problem I am experiencing i.e. unable to customize the folders/unable to choose file/unable to restore default.
But, if I create new folders there is no problem??
