    You can run System File Checker to find out if there is corruption

    \The Group Policy Editor I don't understand why' but nothing I can do about it on at least three occasions over the last 2 years I have come unstuck after trying? I will have some more info re the outcomes of spunk I ran scannow and Command Prompt <. System File Checker then the DISM tool.. to find out if there is corruption > this was what I tried yesterday and last night there were no Logs from either' so I dont know what it was negative outcome I will explain it clearer in the Attachments that I will Post here to you and spunk, like I said it's all pointing to Reinstall as I can find nothing and I have followed every suggestion from you guys Cheers Dasha

    Dasha, I don't understand. I see no quoted reply talking about using a downloaded .reg file to turn Windows Defender on or off, which is what the Option Two I referenced explains how to do.

    So, let me try this one more time then I be quiet. Did you download the reg file from Option Two of the link I provided? If you did, did you double click on it or right click and select Merge to incorporate the change into the registry?

    Nowhere does Option Two mention using regedit or Group Policy editor.

    Ztrucker I went to do that and then it came up Not for Home PC Us Windows only Professional or School and this I remembered because they did not tell me that before i jumped in to my registry I was really P.....d Off??? Their was also a highlighted clip showing in the Reg but not accessible to me I have had a few issues ove the GPE Proff and so realised I would only be risking my registry? Mate give me until tonight? I will go inand try use Brinks Post (see in this attachment), The last thing I want is for you to leave me Mate' without people like you I would never have had the 20 years on a PC after being a Heavy Vehicle driver for 37 years I did not have a clue,

    Ztrucker I have found more about this especially the Last one thats saying that Windows is changing somthik in GP on each Update

      Thank you. I find it (GP Editor) great to use for hardening systems, specifically for parents to make the computers safer for their kids

      Hi, I have downloaded and install script, on fresh install of windows 10 home 1809, GroupPolicy, GroupPolicy Users and gpedit.msc have been installed, gpedit.msc GUI works, buying it doesn’t change registry file to make the changes,ie; use gpedit.msc to disable Windows defender restart pc, but there are no change to registry. and defender is not disabled, in short gpedit.msc can’t change Registry, any ideas?

      Unfortunately, for some reason changes are not applied to any user I choose via mmc.

    Please tell me EXACTLY what you did. If you double click on the downloaded Turn_On_Windows_Defender_Antivirus.reg file you should get prompts as step 6 says:

    6. When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

    No where is there an opportunity for GPEDIT to get involved.

    What EXACTLY are you doing. Please explain, step by step. Don't say I tried that or I tried this. Tell me exactly what you did and exactly where you get the error message.

    Ztruker I anticipated regedit and Group policy was what you meant


    I tried to go to Reg Edit Becaise I knew that I had had trouble with GPE and MS policy re with Windows Home Edition
    I went and researched this as best I could but you obviously did not see it whare I posted it in one of your Posts as an edit abouv you obviously these people are talking about just that" and if you read this you will realise why i assumed it was not correct that you still cannot go that route according to these forum members basically we are on different pages I will do everything you advised tomorrow? Please read this below these are not my words nor my experience its part of the same reaction that others have had with each other and Martin Brinks? Talk tomorrow Ztruker

    I read your post and we're going around in circles.

    Please answer just these questions, no other.

    Did you downloaded the Turn_On_Windows_Defender_Antivirus.reg file?
    Did you double click on it or right click and select Merge?
    When prompted, did you click Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

    I don't want to hear about Regedit or Gpedit, please just answer the above questions.

    If you have finally done the above, then open a Elevated Command Prompt and enter the following:

    reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender"

    The response will look something like this:

    >reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender"

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender
    PUAProtection REG_DWORD 0x1

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender\MpEngine
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Policy Manager
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Windows Defender Exploit Guard

    Only you should have the additional

    DisableAntiSpyware REG_DWORD 0x1

    That's how you can tell the .reg file was successfully merged into the registry.

    Wether that will actually disable Windows Defender or not I don't know.
