Start menu stops working even more often after upgrading to 1903

    Hi,

Before upgrading to Windows 1903 the start menu sporadically stopped working. I would click on Start and got presented with unclickable blank icons. The only way to restore normality was to restart Windows Explorer. This happened maybe once or twice a week. After upgrading to 1903 I had hoped that this would be fixed, but it now happens almost every time my computer wakes up from sleep. Any idea what could be happening and what I should be checking? sfc /scannow reports no errors.

    Thanks,
    Gerry.

Hi, suggests an effect of some installed program hooked in to file explorer. Try a sequence of elimination.

    a. clean boot
    b. Shellexview (free) - allows you to disable a good number of shell extensions (but not all). Do not disable any MS ones (the program hides these).

Then you can check what happens with a new user, created for test purposes.
If the same thing happens, you either have a general windows problem, or something is common to both profiles - e.g. programs installed for all users), or it is Windows corruption.

Hi Dalchina, thanks for the suggestions, sounds like a good plan. It is not a show stopper and as soon as I have a bit of time over I will do as you suggest. Maybe, as my computer is getting a little long in the tooth, I may look to a new box.
    Thanks again,
    Gerry.

    You're welcome.

If not 3rd party program, and it occurs with a new user too, normally I would say try an in-place upgrade repair which keeps all progs and data and most settings. But you say this happened in your previous build and 1903 - so not relevant.

If you have issues with the start menu in 1903 you can also restart the "StartMenuExperienceHost.exe" process, it may help clear the problem up.

    Ed, thanks for the reply.
I turn my computer off each evening, so I would assume this gets started at least once per day. Anyway, it is not really a big deal as there are lots of other things I have to put up with, and restarting Windows Explorer is easy. I just wondered if others also had this issue.
    Cheers,
    Gerry.

Note that if file explorer crashes- or maybe is crashed (not sure if that happens in your case) some links in Settings get lost.
