Hi all, Having a Cortana issue following the May 19 update.

    Symptoms
    1. Does not respond to "hey cortana"
    2. Clicking cortana icon shows cortana as listening for around 3 seconds then times out. does not accept voice commands at this point.
    3. Pressing Win+C, popup appears again no response to voice commands.
    4. Task Manager, Cortana process shows as suspended
    5. All Cortana setting are the same as on my desktop PC which works correctly.
    6. Built in Microphone is recognised and operates correctly in skype.
    7. Windows Search operates normally.

    Attempted Fixes
    1. Disabled/re-enabled sound hardware
    2. Checked for updated drivers
    3. DISM

If you mean the 'May 2019 Update', Windows 10 version 1903, then you may need to look at a new page introduced with 1903:

Settings > Privacy > Voice activation.

Yes I tried that one shortly before my original post, but forgot to add it to the list...

Yep, when I said that the settings were all the same on my working desktop,I was including that section. Funny how MS has broken up the cortana settings over multiple locations....

Not as yet, Cortana is not a deal breaker in this situation, I would rather try some lower level fixes before going Nuclear....Just like being a Guinea pig I suppose

Inplace repair is not nuclear. It is supposed to be non-destructive although I always recommend a backup. It leaves files and apps in place.

Yup I know, But i prefer to find out what is wrong, why it is wrong and how to fix it. Rather than papering over the cracks. I had an issue with an old laptop once where everyone was telling me to roll back to restore points or do repair installs to fix an intermittent USB port. I took the laptop apart and found that the ribbon cable connecting to that port was held in place by some double sided tape between it and the metal laptop frame. As the laptop heated up the frame would expand and pull the ribbon cable out of its socket by just enough to break connection. Contacted HP, notified them that they may have a manufacturing fault. Got a free laptop out of it.

After digging around and a bit more testing, the cortana interface seem to quit rapidly and does not attempt to detect the microphone. The microphone is setup correctly and the troubleshooter has been run multiple times, this is not a microphone fault.

Downloaded the Alexa UWP and it is working fine.
