Help! Windows 10 black screen with cursor after log in

Hi everyone,

I’ve never had this before but an hour ago i started up my pc and after log in my pc screen goes black and you only see a white cursor. I’ve tried some online methods like ctrl alt del and do the explorer trick and restart but that doesn’t work for me. So someone please help me. what can i do about this?

What i have is: windows 10, nvidea geforce gtx 780 on a asus vg278HE screen. Maximus VI formula from asus.

Do you have a system image you can restore from?

Sounds like video driver was updated and did not go successfully. I would shut off all automated driver updates. More on that later.

Before doing any of the steps below have you ever changed password on device. I ask as sometimes when people boot to safe mode it rejects their password as it is looking for an older password. Don't want to add to frustration.



Get back to your login in screen. Click the power icon in lower right, hold the shift key down and click restart. This will start the Advance Startup Options.

Boot to Advanced Startup Options in Windows 10

Follow the tutorial to boot in safe mode with networking. (Troubleshoot > Advance Options > Startup Settings)

In safe Mode run DDU. If you have another computer you can download and sneaker net to this device)

Official Display Driver Uninstaller DDU Download

Use DDU to completely remove all traces of Nvidia.

Once removed boot back to normal mode and install your nvidia driver. Go with an older one, say a month ago.

There are some nvidia Hot Fixes out. Not sure any apply to your circumstances. You might review.
