    From my post #2
You may find further such entries using the more technical Autoruns (free from MS) where the listing is divided into clear sections to help you find those.
Because the crashes are this far apart I do not know how ProcesMonitor could help me.
It keeps a log of everything including registry access but it would become very long. Clearly you could then inspect it at the relevant time. However it is unlikely this would help being so very detailed, as I suggested. Highly technical filtering is supported.

However, as I said, not for the average user.

Considered nevertheless. Would I need to select all processes for logging to file? Or just 3rd parties?

You don't have that choice. It logs everything, then you apply filters (very technical) to choose what is displayed.

Got it. I will put my effort in the more simple stuff first.

    Hello folks,

To let you know there have not been any more crashes for nearly one month. Tentative conclusion is that AIMP audio player has been the cause because it is the first and only software I removed. After uninstallation I also chose to disable a leftover context menu entry with ShellExView.

Holding my breath for a few more weeks before marking as solved.

    Hi dm,

Thanks for getting back and giving us an update on how it was going, sounds promising so far. That menu item, was that a part of AIMP also?

If you have your heart set on AIMP you might want to try a fresh copy or an older one. I tried looking into their FAQS page but it wouldn't switch over from Russian to English for me and using the translator was tedious at best.

If you scroll down from here, that foobar2000 seems popular.

    Hi Anak and thank you.

Yes, the menu item of AIMP is called AIMP Shellext Unit. And I did make the swith to Foobar.
In a few weeks I will go back to the same AIMP version to be more certain it really is the issue.

    Hi dm, you're welcome.

You know, those shellext's can be the cause of problems, sometimes for whatever reason they may not be built right and in turn cause problems.

When you do re-install AIMP see if this CLISD for AIMP {1F77B17B-F531-44DB-ACA4-76ABB5010A28} is located here: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Approved, in the registry.

If you're having problems after the re-install take note of the approved ones you do have at that location and put them in your post.

Great tip! Going to make sure to take a look at that time.

Thought I make a final post to say the issue has been resolved although I never went back to experimenting. AIMP, or a combination of AIMP and something else was the cause.

    Thanks for your help all
