As a Still-Working Computer Tech, I have to know how to install, tweak and service all of the currently used OS's, so I have XP, 7, 8 and 8.1 on separate HD's on my main PC.
Because of some older programs that I still rely on every day, I use XP as my everyday OS.
But my next favorite OS would have to be 8.1, for its speed and versatility. The Classic Shell does make it look and act a lot like XP. And being able to re-enable Windows Mail, on the 64 bit version, makes getting my email very much like Outlook Express.
On the 32 bit ver., Thunderbird works Great.
My customers who have just bought a new PC and find themselves looking at a Metro screen, like the retro look, provided by Classic Shell.

Old folks don't like too many changes.
    Cheers Mates!

I have to vote for Windows 1.0 .... Without it there would be no other versions of Windows...

Personally I have yet to see a touch screen monitor sitting on/at a desktop, save some all-in-ones. Most here would probably think that's ludicrous, although I've toyed with the idea for myself.

With that, I'll post with Alt/S....
My neighbour has one, an HP running Windows 7 and she complains about it. She'd rather use the keyboard and mouse and says you've only got to touch the screen in the wrong place and things open you don't want.

I would imagine! Although there is touch in 7, the desktop is not scaled to the human fingers. That's why they developed 8/8.1, but that is only one of the many reasons why.

    Hi there
My favourite of all time was actually Windows 2003 SERVER which I modified slightly so it would work as a desktop OS - for instance remove nags about when you re-boot and add audio, user games, other multi-media and decent desktop effects and enable proper Internet browsing and access. - Stable as a rock -- far far better than XP - even though all the XP drivers would work on it. It was built on the stability of Windows NT and Windows 2000 and I still use it daily as a VM.

Windows 7 was a good OS too - and I'm actually quite liking W8.1 once I've fiddled around a bit with it - I don't think Touch is a bad thing for some applications - even on a desktop (or actually a laptop) and those "Convertible" type of PC's IMO are going to become the norm for I.T types and some consumers too rather than dedicated PC's or tablets. Windows 8.1 makes a good OS for these types of devices.

    Cheers

Like others I voted 8 thinking that it would also mean/include 8.1 which I really do enjoy using. Every once in a while I jump to 7 in VM Fusion, but am finding it just a little old looking lately. . .

Windows 7 is what I'd have to vote. All around, it's been the most stable.

So far, Windows 8.1 surpasses all for performance
Bugs? Well, I wish I had some of the reported, and more common bugs, so that I could offer more help. No so!
