Best version of Windows

Where I worked, we used IBM Token Ring for our LAN's. We had IBM's "LanNetwork Manager" (we were the Beta test customer for IBM on that product) and it required OS/2.

We were still using DOS for our PC's and Novell Netware 3.12 for the servers.

I voted for Windows XP, I've been using it for 5 years before using Windows 7, which is my second favorite. I can't wait to use Windows 8 on my new system.

Although not a desktop OS I used it as a desktop OS - still have it as a VM --my vote is for Windows 2003 SERVER. (still not quite out of EOL yet). I managed with a few odd changes to get it suitable for running as a desktop OS !! - You need to do a few things to run a SERVER as a desktop OS !!

(All my XP stuff still runs on it so I'm using it rather than XP -- and it's still for the moment getting updates !!).

For the WORST OS -- IMO was WINDOWS NT (or as we called it - Windows Neanderthal or Windows No Thanks). Even to get a simple USB to connect took an inordinate amount of I.T time -- maybe that's why it was beloved by I.T support - nobody else had a clue about it. !!!

Windows 8.1 update 1 isn't actually to horrible either once you've configured it a bit and got rid of the "Kiddy" mobile phone interface.

[USER=219]@fireberd[/USER] -- I remember the old Token Ring -- used that to get IBM mainframe TSO (MVS/370) to run on remote PC's via 3270 / 3278 terminal emulation. !!! Those were the days before everything got Sanitized via outside consultants and change control etc. - You just tried something --if it didn't work you did something else. - No waiting a week for a "Change slot" etc etc. !!!!

You can still run IBM mainframe stuff on a PC via HERCULES !!!

Jimbo, right down my alley. I was a Regional Network and Hardware Help Desk Manager for the US Social Security Admin. We had 3270 "dumb terminal" systems but were moving to LAN's. I had 3725 and 3745 Comm Processors, IBM CAU's and LAM's. PS/2 PC's as Token Ring "Bridges" (to the remote sites). Token Ring was selected as we could control the network better with Token Ring. Token Ring was more "orderly" in how it worked, compared to Ethernet.

I have started trying it out and it is better than I expected.

My recording studio system is on a Windows 7 64bit system (I use Sonar X3). My Win 7 system was down for several weeks because of a motherboard problem and the board was sent back for warranty repair. While it was gone I used my backup system which is Win 8.1 64 bit. My recording studio software and hardware ran equally as well on Win 8.1 as Win 7. If I had to, I wouldn't have a problem with just Win 8.1. I have the Start8 installed that restores the desktop functions, like Win 7.
