Issues caused by deleting Windows.old folder too soon:

Hi. The issues which I'm about to mention I'm sure many of you are already aware of some of which were mentioned on this forum in the past. I thought they are worth bringing them to light again. Twelve days after updating to version 1903 I decided to delete the Windows.old folder using the Windows Disk Cleanup tool. After the tool completed I saw that the Windows.old folder was still there but only contained a few files. I tried to delete the folder but got a message saying it can't be deleted because some files are being used by some other process or something to that affect. I rebooted and then was able to delete the folder. The first issue I noticed is that my SR points were all deleted. The next day when checking the Event Viewer I saw a lot of ESENT 455 errors pointing to C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\TileDataLayer\Database\EDB.log. I went to that location and noticed that there was no TileDataLayer folder. That's when it occured to me that was the folder with its containing files which stopped me from deleting the Windows.old folder completely before I rebooted. I found the fix for the ESENT error problem elsewhere on this forum which is to create the TileDataLayer folder in C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\ and then within that folder create another folder called Database. Within maybe ten minutes the files needed within the Database folder were created and no more ESENT errors. In the future I'll probably wait until the Windows.old folder self deletes. I hope this info will be helpful to others that may experience this problem. Also, I noticed that the pc boots much quicker without the Windows.old folder.

First the System Restore points are deleted because they are not applicable to the updated version.
Windows.old is intended to allow one to revert to the old OS version, it is not used within the new version.
While I agree, the Event viewer error needs addressing by Microsoft, it is not cased by deleting Windows.old. Note the error message refers to C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\TileDataLayer\Database\EDB.log, not anything relative to Windows.old. I hope this helps.

My ESENT errors only started right after the deletion of the Windows.old folder. There were no errors of this kind prior to the deletion of that folder. Also, I had 3 SR points that were created after I updated to 1903. One was from a cumulative Windows update and 2 that I created. After the Windows.old file deletion they were gone. When I deleted the Windows.old folder after updating to version 1809, it was after 22 days and I didn't have the issues that I posted about.

What ever works for you, I always say.
I have multiple Windows 10 systems running and I always run disk cleanup (which deletes Windows.old) immediately after the update and I have never had any of the issues you describe.
I rely on a system image to go back to the previous version should I need to.

    Hi,
Only issues that might likely happen if one checks the box for the optimized files if it's unchecked by system storage/ temp files...

Otherwise must of been something funky to begin with windows old folder disappears after cleanup has completed
Depending on how fast your system will pretty much decide that speed.

And by the way if you use a period.
Why not add another sentence line.
You add a capital letter after so :/

Otherwise you post blocks of text difficult to follow.

Maybe there was some kind of fluke on my end. However I did see a post where where a similar incident happened to someone. In any case everything is working well now. I was just trying to be helpful but seems like I wasn't. Strange things happen sometimes.

    Hi,
Slower machines you may very well be correct
It takes a while for everything to be setup
Just hitting desktop after an install or update... it usually takes a day or so to get it all done
If MS used all resources to install everything everyone would be crying what happen I can't do anything machine is freezing.....

I do know temp files clean up a boat load faster than it used to be it took like 2-3 minutes tops
It used to take from 1809 and back 10-15 minutes and then 5-10 minutes on a restart

Hi and thanks for your input. In my case I think my desktop is pretty fast with an Intel i5-7400 cpu @3GHz with 4 cores. Also have 12 gigs of ram. Have never had this issue in the past. Here is one of the links I found when checking to see if this issue happened to anyone else:https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...c-df3c7aaa6d07

I have Windows.old left from updates and it does not go away if I run disk cleanup. It stays at 32MB which does not seem to be doing any harm. Two question, is the option in Disk Cleanup to clean up system files good to use and are their any downsides. Also, I have been using CCleaner. How does it compare with disk cleanup? Thanks.
