You're screenshot indicates that all three folders are currently protected to be synced on OneDrive.

It shows the "General.one" folder in your "Documents" folder can't be included for some reason. My guess would be some sort of permissions issue preventing access.

    1) I thought from the picture I see here:

Back up your Documents, Pictures, and Desktop folders with OneDrive - Office Support

the folders being synched can he highlighted in gray--and get green check in them -at upper right- with option to stop synching..as I can now do with that "Pictures" folder? Online, it does actually seem like all my files are there..But I guess I'll have to monitor it to make sure it continues synching them

    2) My One Note Notebook is in fact accessible at One Drive online and appears synched. So I dont bother with that General.one folder. Unless you think that might be creating some issues.

    3)
I am still concerned with the "rapturing" of my Desktop up into the OneDrive cloud yesterday. Took a long time to re-populate it down here...

I hope that all the synching merely uploads a copy to OneDrive and does not replace it with a cloud-based file/folder. Is there way I can set things to be sure of that..So far it's only happened to my desktop. I deleted the Desktop folder in the OneDrive directory and unticked desktop in the Settings to stop all that.

    Thanks again

Q1) Sure, you can select to turn on or off sync for folders.

Choose Folders for OneDrive Selective Sync in Windows 10

The check marks are part of OneDrive On-demand.

Turn On or Off OneDrive Files On-Demand in Windows 10

Turn On or Off OneDrive Cloud States for Navigation Pane in Windows 10

Q2) There's no need to try and sync the General.one folder unless you just wanted to. I thought it may have been part of the Documents folder contents you said wasn't fully syncing yet.

Q3) Correct. Only a copy of the files from your PC will be copied to your online OneDrive, and kept synced for changes.

That right-click context menu shown on folders in my OneDrive directory as shown in the above link does not have that entry "Choose OneDrive Folders to Synch" in my case.

    It has:

    a) Share a One Drive link
b) More OneDrive sharing options
    c) View online

Thats all I see in that right click context menu

The choice to synch any given folder is not given to me on right click nor in: Settings-->Account-->Choose folders from within OneDrive settings. In the settings, Im given option to synch only for folders on my desktop

Please go ahead and post a screenshot showing your OneDrive settings for this to see if anything may stand out.

Here is snapshot of Settings-->Choose folders.

The various one drive desktop folders were created by me to stop my desktop from synching and replacing files unexpectedly.

My Control Panel shows a new version of Microsoft OneDrive 19.086.0502.0006 was installed (not by me--probably by MS) on June 13 and the day after my desktop synched a in very unexpected way--as I described in my original post here. So I began some tinkering with the OneDrive folders in Explorer on my PC

"Choose folders" would be the setting to check what you want synced from your online OneDrive to the OneDrive folder on your PC.

Other than the protected folders (Desktop, Pictures, Documents) you can select to backup on OneDrive, you could also use the method below to sync any folder on your PC with OneDrive.

Choose folders only gives me folders already in my OneDrive folder on the pc..Maybe this is as intended? It doesnt allow me to browse folders on my PC to add to my OneDrive for synching.

Is this the way OneDrive intends it?

Other than the protected folders (Desktop, Pictures, Documents) you can select to backup on OneDrive, you could also use the method below to sync any folder on your PC with OneDrive.
Of those protected folders, only Pictures is an "active" folder in my Settings. Documents and Desktop remain blank white rectangles with no option to start/stop synching as I have with Pictures

Yep, only folders on OneDrive sync by default.

You could use this below to sync any folder on your PC on OneDrive though.

ok...I got that part now about files needing to be in the local OneDrive folder in order to synch automatically..Though it seems i cant upload any files from my pc to my online OneDrive. Even those in the OneDrive local folders

There still remains the issue of those Protected Folders-Desktop and Documents-not synching as they should--as suggested by that screenshot-whereby I cannot stop and start the synching process. The Desktop and Documents rectangles remain not selected--regardless of what I do

You can try the other method I posted above to sync those folders from your PC to OneDrive.
