    Hi.
I have set chkdsk /r running, when I left it the screen it showed a message 'Scanning and repairing C: Drive 15% complete' I then went out for about 1 1/2 hours and found the screen black, no message. Clicking the mouse brought up the curser and the windows rolling circle.I have no idea if check disk is still running or if the PC is stuck or what's going on.
The rolling circle is flashing twice then a space then again two flashes, a bit like morse code stuck on one letter.
I will give it a few more hours and hope something happens. If not would rebooting cause any problems?

I have a spare battery so will change over later.

Hard to say, while we know chkdsk is attempting something we don't know what.

I hope you did the backup I suggested in post 17.

    and tested boot media !!!

I found I had a problem with my boot media yesterday for Macrium on this board, I was doing their update. Seems USB drivers are messed up. I came up with work around.

    Did yours test okay?

    Hi Ken.
I have printed out the tutorial for Macrium Reflect but as yet have not done backup . I have not yet downloaded the program.

I will the PC a little longer to see if it sorts itself out or does something nice like saying 100% complete and all faults corrected.............
I have backups of my important files both to spare drives and cloud so if all goes pear shaped should be able to rebuild.

Ohps' that didn't go to plan.
Will not boot at all. Auto Repair failed. Stopcode NTFS File System.
My sys image shows only as an old 2018 image. my system restore CD reports the drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again.
No clue as how to unlock a non responsive drive though. Any suggestions?

    Tried this.
Hard drive locked during Windows 10 recovery

If you choose to refresh your PC from the Windows 10 Recovery Environment, then the following error may appear: "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again." To resolve the issue, follow the steps below

    1. Hit Cancel on the error message. The computer should boot to the Windows 10 Recovery Environment. NOTE: If the computer is able to boot into Windows, then follow the steps listed in the following article to reboot to the Windows Recovery Environment: How to access the Windows Recovery Environment in Windows 10.
    2. Click on Troubleshoot.
    3. Then click Advanced options from the Troubleshoot menu.
    4. On the Advanced options screen that appears, click the Command Prompt.
    5. At the command prompt, type bootrec /FixMbr and press Enter on the keyboard.
    6. Type bootrec /fixboot and press Enter.
    7. Type bootrec /ScanOs and press Enter.

    8. Type bootrec /RebuildBcd and press Enter.
    9. Finally, type Exit and press Enter.

    NOTE
: A prompt for Total identified Windows installations: may now appear with the choices of Add installation to boot list? Yes<y>/No<n>/All<a>:. Type Y for Yes to continue with the rebuild process.
The computer should reboot and allow the refresh or repair of Windows 10 to complete.

#7 in cmd prompt shows 0 windows installations indentified.

After the above my PC still shows as having a locked drive.

    Ouch.

If you have a working system image and can boot from media you could try chkdsk again on the correct drive. Don't run with any switches ( /'s). Chkdsk should unlock.

Have to go out, I will check back later.

Nothing much seems to be working, I have tried my windows system repair disc to no avail. I have a system image on a WD passport USB remote drive and have kept it updated every few weeks, when I tried it earlier it only showed an image from Jan 2018 so no idea why there is not a later one.
However after the dos attempt to unlock the drive Win 10 does not even see the Passport drive.
So, as I still have my Win 7 Pro 64 installed on a multi button Orico system slector I am updating the 7 so can use that until I can sort the 10.
I still had to press F1 to boot to Win7 though.....

    That is interesting.

Do you have a speaker attached to front panel headers so we can hear what it is compalining about? Page 2-31

Did any of your other drives report read errors?

You were going to change that battery, did you?

Did you ever replace the battery and consider reflashing the BIOS as I suggested above?

I suspect by now you might have to recover from a backup or reinstall Windows if you don't have a backup.
