Cloud search in Windows 10 v 1903 no longer working

In the past, you used to be able to do simple math or web searches in Cortana (when search and Cortana were one) and have the results show up in the right hand side of the search pane.

However, after upgrading to version 1903--where search and Cortana have been separated), it seems that's no longer possible--you now have to search online or open a browser:

Is there a way around this to go back to the original search functionality where the results appeared readily?

Hi, nearest might be to use Open Shell (free start menu derived from Classic Shell), where typing 2*4*5 (say) in its search field doesn't find anything, but to the right one click opens the browser and then gives your familiar outcome.

(Note- its search field is quite configurable).

So is the functionality that was there for math and basic search (weather, dictionary words, etc.) is gone?!

Unfortunately I don't yet have 1903 as I need a 3rd party prog to be updated first, so hopefully someone with that can confirm.

Do you still get web search results when using the search field?

    I'm running 1903 18362.145. When I type in 10 x 2, the right pane shows a calculator with 10 x 2 = 20.

    Thanks @RichardC.
I'm running the same version: 1903 18362.145. I'm guessing that means there's got to be a setting to control this.

In Settings, under Search, do you have these same options selected?

BTW, I found this (old) post:

Turn On or Off Search online and include web results in Windows 10

It says to update the registry, but this is for the 18xx version.

Aagha, My permissions & history is the same as yours except I have device history and search history both switched to off. Don't know if that makes a difference but you could try. If it doesn't you could switch them back to on.

This may or may not be of help. I saw this thread after I updated to 1903 and decided to test things for myself. On opening the search field though, I noticed that "Web" was missing as an option altogether, both in the list across the top, and in the drop down under "More". When I type anything at all I am offered no web results or even an option to "search the web for x, y or z" like in your screenshot. My settings are the same as yours except my search history & device history are turned off (changing this didn't help). I then started to wonder if I had a corrupted installation, however I have discovered that the country I have selected as my location was the issue.

I live in New Zealand. On previous versions of Windows 10, in order to use Cortana and maximise searching function, I had to choose English (Australia) as my preferred language, regional format, and for speech settings. I could keep NZ for my time zone settings and country I am located in, as long as everything else in "Time and Language" was set to English (Australia). These were the settings carried over from 1809.

However in 1903 it is all back to front! It would seem I can have everything in my language settings and time zone settings set to NZ and English (New Zealand), but in order for "Web" to appear in search (and any web results) it insists I change the country I am located to Australia! I haven't tried other countries - just NZ and Australia. This is most annoying as it affects my apps and the content I get.

So I would suggest playing around with what is in your Time and Regional Settings and see if that helps (assuming you are not in Australia :P). Once I change my country to Australia and type in 10 x 2 I get the same result as RichardC - a calculator displaying the result and some links to click. I suspect it has something to do with countries where Cortana is supported (even though it is now a separate entity).
