Is W10 1903 stable enough to replace 1809?

Intel support advised me that I may have to (re)install Windows because of a problem between Windows and Intel's latest Intel video drivers for my chipset. I am using now 1809 and it was very stable for me, so I am asking if there are any issues with 1903. With either version I would not be updating, but installing fresh from ISO.

No, there are still too many bugs being reported. MS even confirmed, that 1909 will not be really an upgrade, but more like a service pack, since they have fallen behind and 10 needs to be properly fixed.

On the other side of the coin I have the latest version of 1903 and I do not have any issues at all. My home built AMD PC is stable and fast. No issues here.

........And even on a further side.........I am successfully running 1903 on both a HP laptop and desktop. The Hp laptop is only two years old and the desktop is ancient (10 years and counting -- the one listed in my computer specs).

If the Microsoft team can make 1903 run on a two year old computer and a ten year computer the same; all I have to say is they must've figured something out.

As far as bugs, the only one I have encountered is the jump-list feature for wordpad or notepad. I just had to toggle the switch and the jumplists started working again.

Another thing I didn't like, is the Acrylic Blur effect being set to a default of blur the background on the lock-screen/sign-in screen.
@Brink published an article back in January 2019 on how to fix that in the registry if you don't have the Group Policy Editor option available.

Enable or Disable Acrylic Blur Effect on Sign-in Screen in Windows 10

Thanks Shawn --- that worked perfect!
And thanks for adding the link!

I've been running it on my work/gaming machine since release with no issues so far. I did have one minor one where I wasn't able to print but managed to fix that.

Have had it only for a day today since this morning. Can't really comment. Only played Pool Nation FX no stuttering/lag on that so far.

However, I have to admit that 1903 consumes a little bit more RAM compared to 1809. It's good for systems with 16GB RAM. But not for people such as myself with only 8GB RAM.

I'm still wondering if I should continue using Windows 10, such a big RAM sucker.

First of all the boot time is slower than 1809. 1809 booted in 12-14 seconds. 1903 is booting 18-22 seconds for me. Win 8.1 in only 9 seconds. Now you have a new background process called StartMenuExperienceHost.exe which consumes 20+ MB RAM in the background and won't go away. You've also got WindowsInternal.ComposableShell.Experiences.TextInput.InputApp.exe that consumes 9+ MB RAM and no longer goes to Suspended mode like in 1809.

While Cortana and Windows Search may now be separable, it is false advertisement. Cortana continues to run as a background process and is tied with SearchUI.exe! I upgraded to 1903 thinking that Cortana will no longer be a background process. But I have been fooled.

I also had the Acrylic Blur effect but I managed to change that from the Group Policy Editor.

Ok so one good news is that the Disk Cleanup bug is fixed the Downloads folder and Temporary Internet files now can be fully erased to 0 unlike before.

But other than that so far I've not noticed big differences.

I have removed both useless processes: SearchUI.exe and StartMenuExperienceHost.exe. TextInput.InputApp.exe can be disabled or uninstalled, well it is not running on mine PC.

Thanks for all the comments, it's much appreciated.

I ask because of two issues.

The first is an annoyance. The Recycle bin component is damaged and is only partially functional. No Properties, or the original icons and is missing Recycle Bin related controls from the Windows Explorer menu ribbon, (like "Empty Recycle bin", etc.) Tried every tool and suggestion offered here and on other sites but none works.

The second problem is more serious: Intel's latest video driver installation messed up Windows and it shows two drivers (of the same name) which causes ambiguous and defective results. Intel twice advised to re-install the OS.

Either installs (1809 or 1903), each have 50%-50% to succeed, and the mobo is an 8th generation Intel B360 from ASRock.

One more vote here for no issues at all on a laptop and desktop with 1903.
