laptop's ac power keeps turning off

    Hi,

My laptop's battery is no good so I always use the laptop on ac power. It was working fine last night but today it keeps shutting down after a minute or so. I've just noticed the battery icon will start off showing the power plug next to it but then the plug disappears... if I disconnect the power lead and reinsert it, I will get the plug showing again but only momentarily.

Wondering what my first steps should be... is it possible it's a setting or software problem rather than the power unit/cord itself?

(am using trusty old--if loud--laptop at the moment)

    thanks in advance.

Totally remove the battery and just run it off the power adapter. Make sure the power adapter is plugged directly into the wall socket and not thru a Power Strip or Extension Cord.

am trying that now... when I turned it on it says windows is working on updates, don't turn off your computer.... of course it wants to do that now. eek!

... it now says it's restarting... hasn't shut down from power problem yet, and it wouldn't have lasted this long before...

it's restarted and everything looks fine! battery icon has a X and the plug is showing and it's not disappearing on me.

Thank you SO much!! You guys are bloody awesome. <3

Should I not connect to a power board from now on? This will be awkward, but doable if needs must.

No, you can connect to a power strip and it should still work, if not, you know what to do. Just leave the battery out until you buy a new one.
What is the make and model# of your laptop? You can buy a new battery on Ebay just type in your make and model# in the search bar and add the word Battery.

I've connected it to the power board again and it's working fine.

It's a Hewlett Packard Notebook but I'm not sure of the model number. Will that be in the specs somewhere?

ETA found the model number on sticker underneath: 15-ay043TX

Download and install HP diagnostics Windows: (right upper area of the link)
HP PC Hardware Diagnostics | HP(R) Official Site

Launch the application > click system tests > click the system extensive test tab > in the right lower corner click run once > click component tests > some are interactive > post images of the test results into the thread

It wouldn't hurt to run Diagnostics, though we already know that the computer is booting because you have been running your computer with a dead battery in it. Now that you have pulled the battery out, look at the label on the battery and do a search for that particular part #. You should also have a sticker in the battery compartment with the laptop model #
Here are a couple of sites that sell replacement batteries for your model
