Windows 10: PC Freezing / Hanging everywhere.

    Hello,

I've been getting PC freezes on and off for about a month now. This first started when I playing Division 2, my game would freeze and completely lock up my computer. I wouldn't be able to Alt-Tab, Ctrl-Alt-Del, or anything and had to manually restart my PC in order to temporarily fix the issue until it happened again. My PC specs were below the reccommended needeed for the game at the time, however it was weird occurance since I was able to play the game perfectly fine for a couple weeks prior to the issues first appearing. However I'm still getting freezes and hangs to this day after upgrading a few different components (Motherboard, CPU, RAM). Also to further explain the hanging, I will for example click on the windows start menu, and it will seem unresponsive and only carry out the task of opening the start menu a couple of seconds after having clicked it. During this, everything else will also be unresponsive except for being able to move my mouse. Sometimes it resolves itself after a couple of seconds, though other times everything will stay unresponsive while only being able to move my mouse. But also at times even the mouse will freeze and I will be completely unable to interact with my PC which again is only a temporary fix. It's difficulty to analyse the issue through means of trial and error, since the freezes and hangs seem almost random. Some days I will go without issues, other times I may be in a constant loop of having to restart my PC numerous times. This also happens with other games as well as outside of games while I'm on my desktop either browsing the internet, listening to music or even if I'm just idle.

    My PC Specs at the time;
    - OS: Windows 10 Professional (64 Bit)
    - Motherboard: ASUS M5A78L-M/USB3
    - CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1100T (3.30GHz)
    - GPU: AMD Radeon R9 290x
    - RAM: HyperX Fury DDR3 4GB 1000MHz (12GB Total)
    - SSD: Kingston HyperX Fury 240GB
    - PSU: Corsair TX 750W
    - Headset: Logitech G430
    - Keyboard + Mouse: B2100-Blazing Gaming Desktop

I have upgraded to the following parts:
    - Motherboard: Gigabyte B450M DS3H
    - CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600X (3.60GHz)
    - RAM: HyperX Predator DDR4 8GB (16GB Total)

    Here is a link to my UserBenchmark performance results;
    Gigabyte B450M DS3H Performance Results - UserBenchmark

Below is a list of things I've attempted with no success of finding a solution.

    - Since then, I have also completely reinstalled windows but I am still getting freezes and hanging even on a fresh install. I've tried installing the OS on a different HDD, but the issues are followed there. Therefore I don't think it is an issue with my SSD.

    - If the reinstall didn't get rid of any potential viruses, I have also conducted various scans with 4 different programs (Windows, Avast, Malwarebytes, and Advanced System Repair Pro) which all came back with clean results, both prior to reinstalling windows and also afterwards on the clean install and found nothing malicious.

    - It may be nothing, but I would also like to mention that the issues started happening around about the time to when I replaced my previous broken headset to the one I now own (Logitech G430), however I've tried disconnecting the headset as well as uninstalling all it's required software but it has not helped.

    - I've also updated all neccessary drivers through manual means as well as through Device Manager and various driver updating softwares (DriverEasy).

    - I tried running SFC and DISM through the Command Prompt. The SFC did come back with findings of corrupt system files which it went on to fix, but this has not resolved the freezes.

    - I've done a Memory test which came back clean without issues both prior and after replacing my PC parts. During this I also ensured that both Motherboards were set to run at their default factory states and emptied the memory caches.

    - Enabled high power performance, and disabled any automatic sleep or shut-off options after a certain period of time that was available.

If anyone has had similar problems, or would be able to give any advice on the matter - I would really appreciate it. If you require any additional details, please don't hesitate to ask, though I've tried my best to summarise everything I have done thus far, but may have missed some things. Thank you in advance!

Hi Dephonic. Welcome to the TenForums @Dephonic

Interesting that after a clean install you already had SFC issues.

You didn't mention if wired or wireless connection? I assume wired, can you confirm and try wired if wireless.

On your network connection are you getting near contracted values? ( Yo pay for 50 Mbps and you get that amount or near enough)

You said this started around the time of the new headset. If you totally remove and uninstall software does issue persist?

To see if this is not some other software you could try the clean boot method. Please disconnect any external hardware you don't need. (Game controllers, etc)

Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 10 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts

You mention running hardware analysis against your OS drive. What other drives do you have and have you checked them?

In tasks Manager is any category running consistently above 50% even at idle? (CPU, Memory, etc)

If you open Reliability history are there signs of trouble (Click Start, type reliability history)

Are any devices in device manage reporting issues. ( Yellow exclamation marks)

Not saying to update BIOS but could you see if your current BIOS is the most up to date one.

    Thanks for the welcome, Ken.

I do have a wired network connection, yes. I've done a generic online speed test and my results came back with 220.30 Mb/s download, and 12.17 Mb/s upload speeds.

Regarding the headset, I have previously tested it by uninstalling all software updates, removing the software itself, and unplugging the headset as well but neither of the methods fixed my issue.

I did have a seperate HDD that I was using for storage previously, and decided to try installing the OS onto there instead of my SSD. But the freezes and hanging persisted on there too. I've tried various different hard drive softwares to check both of their health statuses, but they both seem to be fine and came back with no reported issues in all of the testing results. I've got my HDD disconnected at the moment too but that also has not helped with the freezes or lag / hanging.

    Task manager shows GPU and CPU at 1% maximum usually when at idle. Memory shows to be around 20%. Here's a screenshot of when I'm idle;
    https://i.imgur.com/is9buTf.png

Device Manager is not showing any signs of issues, looked through all the drop-downs and not seeing any yellow exclamations.

BIOS I've updated chipset drivers from the CD that comes with my motherboard to the most current.

I've had a look at the Reliability History and there's a lot of critical events being displayed. However the majority of them seem to be from when my PC ended up freezing or locking up and required me to manually shut down via the power button on my computer, and has been reported as "Windows was not shut down properly". I've taken some time though to screenshot every event history where critical events or warnings have been present and have included them below in order of date.

    Ugly report.

When I say BIOS I mean that actual BIOS. (Firmware)

Click Start, type System Information, click on app. The opening page will have a line, BIOS Version Date, mine is 1801

    Windows 10: PC Freezing / Hanging everywhere.-image.png

I went to Gigabyte and they have produced several for your board.

    B450M DS3H (rev. 1.0) | Motherboard - GIGABYTE Global

Seven updates since inception. Please confirm this is your board. I selected based on info you provided, only you know for sure.

Yours are numbered differently, F40 looks like the most recent from nine days ago.

    Are you up to date?

Before updating understand the risks of updating. Always read instructions twice and be very patient. Ideally do it connected to UPS, for sure not when it is storming. An incorrectly patched BIOS can leave you with a useless pile of electronic components. Different boards have different capabilities to recover, some don't have any. Not scare tactics, just understand. Touch wood I've never had an issue and I've done lots. Should probably do mine again.

I can confirm that's my motherboard. The BIOS version I currently have is the F3 one, which is a couple updates prior to the most recent. However I'm not comfortable with updating the actual firmware since I've been having these freezes and hangs on both motherboards, which would seem logical to me in assuming that it's not a Motherboard related issue and so I don't want to go through the unnessary risk of updating the firmware if I can avoid it.

    1) There is a log collector used in another forum.
Run the V2 log collector and upload the results into this thread.

    BSOD - Posting Instructions

    2) Update the specs in the "My Computer" section:

System Specs - Fill in at Ten Forums
In the left corner below in your post you find 'My System Specs'.
After clicking it you can find a link a little below that says 'Update your System Spec', click on this link to get to the page where you can fill in your system specs.
System Info - See Your System Specs - Windows 7 Help Forums

Include PSU. cooler, case, peripherals and anything attached to the computer by wired or wireless (mouse, keyboard, headset, printer, xbox, USB wireless network card, etc.)

You are five versions behind with two mentioning support for Ryzen processors.

Your call, it looks like a two step update, F32 before F40.

Lets see what zbook's analysis provides.

There is pretty much nothing in your Reliability Monitor. Loads of not shutting down Windows properly, you would know about that anyway as you did it. The rest is not much.
There is a lot that never gets in to there anyway, a vague guide really.

The columns in your Task Manager need sorting by clicking on a column header to be any use, say CPU usage, or disk usage at the top.

I notice the common hardware is the Graphics Card ? and as you get the same problem with different MOBOs that I would think is a pointer, maybe.

I would check Graphics Card processor temperatures for a start, and remove any overclocking if that is the case. Run at stock speeds, or underclock.

"- and various driver updating softwares (DriverEasy)."
That is quite a worry as you really don't need to do run any such application.

"I have also conducted various scans with 4 different programs (Windows, Avast, Malwarebytes, and Advanced System Repair Pro) which all came back with clean results, "

That is also a worry in that you feel you require to run so many security applications, each may not have been uninstalled properly leaving conflicting remnants.

Bear in mind these are random thoughts & guesswork, not a solution which is really a hands on jobbie.

Hello zbook - I've done as you asked, and attached the V2 Log results accompanying this message, as well as updating my Profile's system specs more accurately.

I'd also like to note that my PC ended up freezing upon executing the Log collector shortcut, and couldn't interact with anything or even move my mouse. I waited a couple of seconds but it didn't recover, so I did the usual of manually restarting my computer.

Hey Helmut - I've taken some additional screenshots of task manager while idle on desktop and sorted them as you suggested by column header.

    https://i.imgur.com/xDxcm5d.png (CPU)
    https://i.imgur.com/FLJEgF7.png (Memory)
    https://i.imgur.com/C7ROuXR.png (Disk)
    https://i.imgur.com/Dh4fda0.png (GPU)

And yes that is correct, the GPU is the common hardware remaining, as well as the PSU. Graphic card would usually run at around 80 degrees when playing Division 2 after an hour or so for example. However the R9 290X Series is notorious for higher temperatures so this is nothing out of the ordinary and I am used to higher temperatures from AMD GPU's in general. Idle temperature is at around 40. I've got it set up at the moment to not exceed past 80 degrees.

The DriverEasy and the other 4 previously mentioned softwares was a means to finding a solution after the fact of when the freezing and hangs first started, and so I was trying to be as thorough as I could in finding a possible solution. I don't ever use programs like this otherwise, especially not in such quantities and have uninstalled everything since then as it was not providing a fix.

Hope this helps, thank you for the continued support.

    There were no BSOD.
There were many event 41 and 6008 which can be caused by power off after hangs or freezes or crashes.

    1) The BIOS: Version/Date American Megatrends Inc. F3, 24/12/2018

    Upgrade the BIOS: F3 > F40

    B450M DS3H (rev. 1.0) | Motherboard - GIGABYTE U.S.A.

    2) In the left lower corner search type: system or system control > open system control panel > on the left pane click advanced system settings

    a) > on the advanced tab under startup and recovery > click settings > post an image of the startup and recovery window into the thread

    b) > on the advanced tab under performance > click on settings > on the performance options window > click on the advanced tab > under virtual memory > click on change > post an image of the virtual memory window into the thread

    3) Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    4) sfc /scannow
    5) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    6) chkdsk /scan
    7) wmic recoveros set autoreboot = false
    8) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

    9) Make sure that there is no over clocking while troubleshooting.
