Problems accessing files on windows 10

I formatted my machine the other day and enter a slightly different name when I was setting up the user profile and now I am having many issues accessing some files stored on my computer and copies of the same files stored on a NAS. Whenever I try and open them, I get the error message "Sorry, we couldn't find xxxxx. Is it possible it was moved, renamed or deleted?". The files are still there, they haven't moved and I haven't deleted them. I have no idea how to access my files, can anyone help me please?

    Thanks,
    Dave

Dave, could we please have some more specifics?

You say that you are having difficulties accessing files on the computer as well as on a NAS. For the local files, how are you trying to access them? Through an app, file explorer, etc? Is all access failing or can you perform basic operations such as copying the files from file explorer or displaying the properties of the files?

As for the NAS, have you tried to access the files using the same credentials that you had previously? You had noted that you have a different user name now, so trying the previous name would be a good test. When you try to connect to the NAS from File Explorer, check the box to "Connect using different credentials". Supply the same user name and password that you used before the reinstall. If that works, you may need to update the permissions on the NAS.

In any case, the more detail on this issue that you can provide, the better to help in determining the cause of the problem.

I worked out how to edit it. The problem was the length of the excel document that was preventing me from opening it.

@Davewpaton: If you ever find yourself in this situation again, you can use Voidtools Everything to index all drives and files. Then if you use that tool to search for files and folders by name, it will find them no matter where they are. I routinely use Everything to find stuff on my production system, which has 10 disk drives and over 10 TB of drive space attached. Works like a charm! In your specific case, a partial search on the leading characters of the filename should have found what you were looking for. I assume you violated the 256 character limit restriction on path length + filename length.
