How to force registry refresh?

Hello,

When doing changes like
- adjusting the mouse cursor speed
- setting the color settings of the nvdia display
those things get saved within the registry.

When I manually edit the registry, the values are there, but nothing changes.
I always need to reboot so that Windows 10 reads them in.

Is there a way to force a registry refresh or at least for a specific part of the registry?
Maybe it will take too long if Windows reads in everything again.

It depends on exactly which part of the registry you change, but in most cases just restarting Explorer is sufficient.

There is no general way to do this.

Changing an entry in the registry doesn't in itself do anything. Some part of Windows or an application must read the entry and take some action. They all have their own rules about when this will happen. In most cases this is undocumented. Much of the registry itself is not officially documented.

Most of the settings in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE are checked only on system startup and there is no other way for them to take effect. If the settings are associated with an application restarting the application is often necessary.

For settings in HKEY_CURRENT_USER a logoff login cycle is often necessary for settings to take effect. In other cases restarting explorer.exe will work.

Log off/log in is not a solution for me.

You can use procmon to identify the exact process to restart. Theres plenty of help articles about it, for example: windows - Where is the registry location for the Settings > Devices > AutoPlay > "Removable Drive" - Super User

If you want help with a few specific ones I will attempt to locate them for you. You do NOT need to settle for "restart explorer.exe"
