It was official Microsoft support. Call them if you want or chat with them. They made me login into my microsoft account and try the autobot thing but a real person finally got on the chat at my request. MS support has always been great to me. I suppose she could be mistake, but I don't it.

Or just install Cygwin. It's free. And it's WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better than WSL.
The latter is missing so much of Linux that I gave it up. It has a long way to go.

Meanwhile Cygwin has over 25 years of maturity under its belt.
You'd swear you were running a Linux system.
Not sure what you mean by "missing so much". If you are referring to GUI apps, that can be added. WSL 2 will have an actual Linux kernel shipped with the system, rather than the current mapping of linux calls to windows ones.

Not GUI apps. I have no need for a Linux GUI. I have Windows for that.

As for what's missing ... I can't remember exactly. It was about features, utilities, functionality. All I can remember is that lots of things just were not there. It's not Linux.

I didn't want to suffer the setback, so I stayed with Cygwin, which has everything I need. It's Linux in a Windows disguise. Take a look.

    Hi folks

problem with cygwin is that it's just trying to do what WINE in Linux does (runs Windows binaries in Linux).
WSL is running actual Linux commands and the update will be shipped with a proper Linux kernel.

WINE is only of limited use --I've tried things like OFFICE =-- It works (sort of) up to about Office 2010 but not much use after that --Office 2019, hardware video capture (from SKY Q and Amazon fire TV boxes) and photoshop are about the only Windows things I need and those don't work on WINE.

I have used cygwin to get the HERCULES emulator to run some old IBM mainframe stuff on a PC -- you can get the old MVS IBM OS with JES2 (spooling system) and TSO !!! to actually run on a laptop !!! -- quite fun to do - but ran cygwin on a Linux laptop. If you do get the IBM MVS system to work you will appreciate the complexity of getting any background jobs to run --it had the most ugly and complex system of job submission via its JCL (job control language) !!!!! Glad those days are long gone.

Bash scripting can be really useful and it will be interesting to see what upgrades the WSL will have. There are ways to run GUI programs as well but not a full blown desktop. Things like SAMBA etc do work though !! so the Bash script can handle external NAS devices and you can use easy things like CRONTAB for scheduling tasks --could be a great way of automating backups to NAS or even scheduling downloads etc.

    Cheers

I think you're thinking of something else. WSL *IS* an actual linux distribution, in fact there are several of them. You can have an actual Ubuntu, or Suse or a bunch of others. You can connect to their package servers, and update them to the latest versions if you want. The only thing WSL couldn't do was things that required specific kernel drivers, and some specific low-level networking. That will be fixed in WSL 2 with the actual linux kernel being shipped.

If there's something you think is missing, i'd be curious to know what it was.. since you don't remember, i'd say it must not have been very important.

I thought this was about the Windows Linux Subsystem, sometimes called Bash on Windows. Is that not what this is about?

Bash for Windows was an early name, it became WSL.

Bash for windows is a REALLY old name (3 years or so) for an early, pre-release version.

The official WSL was released about a year later i believe, and was much more complete.
