Except for programs/applications directly running from Desktop folder, all icons are shortcuts but arrows appear only on shortcuts placed by user.
What's an example of a shortcut which doesn't have an arrow because it wasn't placed by a user?

One example is when a program places an desktop icon during it-s installation. Another one is when a portable program is placed in Desktop folder.

    Remove Arrows from shortcuts

    Motim,
Did you try the blank option in step 2 of Option 1 using the transparent.ico in the yellow Tip box?
    Hello and Thanks.
I tried everything - nothing worked. Searched the internet and found a small portable program
named"UltimateWinTweeker4.zip", used it only to remove those arrows - it worked.
I was curious what it did in the registry, opened it and the key "Shell icons" was 29 and the text was "C:\ProgramData\empty.ico".
Now some question: Can I get back the nice "Defender" window as on the previous system, please see attached screenshot.
    Answers will be appreciated.
    Thanks

That always has an arrow as it is a shortcut.

That never has an arrow as it's not a shortcut..

Odd. That's the same method the tutorial below uses.

Shortcut Arrow Icon - Change, Remove, or Restore in Windows 10

Just to verify, did you follow all the steps exactly? I just tested on my system to see if something may have changed, but Option 1 and 2 still works for me.

Exactly but it's a link (.lnk) just as any shortcut. There can also be an .exe of a portable program.

So no example of a shortcut which doesn't have an arrow because it wasn't placed by a user?

How do you tell if an icon represents a shortcut or not if there is no arrow?
    Exactly!

You can't tell (at first glance) if it is an Application or a Shortcut.
I'd say to leave it alone.
