    Remove arrows from shortcuts

    Hello Forum,
On my previous system (1709) I removed the annoying arrows from desktop shortcuts using instructions given here "How to get rid of app shortcut arrows on the Windows 10 desktop | Windows Central".
Tried this on the upgraded system (1803), all desktop icons became black.
Edited back the registry and the icons came back but with the arrow. Now is there some other way to 'tweek' and remove those arrows.
    Answers will be appreciated
    Thanks

Hi, I use WinaeroTweaker.exe to get rid of the shortcuts arrow. Try it...

    Hello Motim,

The tutorial below can show you how to easily remove the shortcut arrow overlay without having to use a 3rd party program if you like.

    Hello,
    Thanks for the answer.
Followed the instructions in the tutorial, ended with big arrows instead of icons. Opened again the registry editor and removed the new "Shell icons" key, got icons back with the arrow.
Will try to use 3rd party program.
Some things changed after the 1803 upgrade, I'll have more questions
In the meantime can somebody tell me please how to get back the nice interface of "Defender", with the three tabs and the push button to update.

    Motim,

Did you try the blank option in step 2 of Option 1 using the transparent.ico in the yellow Tip box?

How do you tell if an icon represents a shortcut or not if there is no arrow?

    Hey Rich,

Without the arrow to make it easy, you would have to right click on the file/folder and click on Properties to see if there's a "Shortcut" tab on its properties page.

Sorry Shawn, I knew that. My post was some what tongue in cheek I guess as I don't understand why you would want to remove the arrow. All comes down to preference, even over function.

Tru dat. Personally, I prefer to keep the arrow, or change it if one likes for that very reason.

Except for programs/applications directly running from Desktop folder, all icons are shortcuts but arrows appear only on shortcuts placed by user. In normal usage it really doesn't matter how an icon/shortcut is placed on desktop and is fugly at least. Registry method doesn't seem to work any more, in best case it just leaves empty square instead of arrow.
