    No recovery partition in 1903?

So, I just did a clean install of version 1903. It's on an old legacy bios system. First thing I noticed was there is no recovery partition! I only have a 579 MB system reserved partition and the OS partition (118.67 GB on a 128 GB SSD). Reagentc /info shows recovery is a folder in the OS partition now. Anyone else notice this? Before the clean install, I ran diskpart clean command on the drives and installed to the unallocated space to let setup create whatever partitions it wanted.

I found the same with a Ver 1809 clean install. Just the 500MB EFI system partition & the OS partition itself. No Recovery partition.

Partition wizard also shows the 128MB reserved partition that has become standard now on all [GPT?] internal drives [but that is never shown using Windows own Disk management].

I think dalchina knows a fair bit about this subject if you want to investigate it.

    Perhaps another serious MS bug?

Not a bug, a feature. This seems to have always been an alternative location Setup can use in place of a dedicated partition.

My test machine (System Two below) has never had a separate recovery partition, Reagentc /info shows C:\Recovery folder was used instead. I can confirm that it works as a fully functional recovery 'partition'. In my case it was a Windows 10 legacy MBR system that was upgraded to Windows 10 version 1511. With four MBR partitions already allocated for other functions Setup had nowhere else to put its 'recovery' environment so it used C:\ instead.

A clean install of 1903 on this test machine also had no separate recovery partition, but this may not be something new. A clean install of 1809 on another legacy MBR machine also used the C:\ drive for the recovery environment. Here I have mounted the Macrium image of its C: drive and explored C:\Recovery\WindowsRE\Winre.wim using 7-Zip.

Some people's bugs are other people's improvements! I've always hated the separate recovery partition and usually deleted it anyway!

    I have a 100MB System Partition and 3 x86 versions of windows 10 - each it's own partition on a MBR Disk
I have windows 8.1 and 3 other x64 versions of windows 10 and WinPE on a GPT disk
I boot legacy mode with an option to boot into 8 different OS's
Each Recovery is assigned to the same partition as the OS

If I am trying to script the 1903 install using diskpart how many partitions do I need to create?

    With 1803 I was creating 3 partitions:
    • Partition 1 - System Partition
    • Partition 2 - Windows Partition
    • Partition 3 - Recovery Partition

    Hmmm...

I used to have a lenovo recovery partition, you know, in case I ever wanted to go back to the way it was when I brought it home.

Is that gone now or is it still there only under an assumed name?
