If your system runs fine on Windows 10, a ram upgrade should do you great.

Surely it can't be a day over 11 years old

The Dell Latitude E6500 laptop PC was released in August 2008...

For a 'just for general use' machine 4GB should be sufficient. I have one with 4GB that will run quite happily without a swapfile and still have unused RAM.

For my suggestion remove some startup item or program that was included on your windows 10 for optimization and speed. It will be much better to stick with windows 10 since Microsoft will no longer support or create update for windows 7.

Are there any shortcomings that you are hoping to improve upon?

The most cost effective upgrade is to install a cheap SSD. See how that goes and install another 4GB RAM from a cheap source if you find that 4GB is a limitation. You can buy a 120GB SSD for use as a system drive for under £20 and reuse your existing hard disk for user file storage. Surely you can afford to spend £20 if you want to use the PC?

post #1: "sticking with 10 will i see a significant improvement if not ill stick with 10"
--- Description of what you are looking for "significant performance" for please.

I have an older Dell Inspiron 580, I don't know the year it was released but ship date to the owner was May 31, 2011.
--- I have Win10 1809 and it runs as good as new.
--- When it gets to 1903, I will expect the same performance.
--- I got it for free from the owner in Feb 2016 because they had problems that would fit into your description of "significant performance".
--- All it needed was a new HDD and I offered it back to the owner but they didn't want it back and just bought a new computer instead.
--- I installed an SSD & it runs as good as new as mentioned.

Go Dell's website, let it recognize your Dell computer, they will most likely recommend you install their Dell Support Assist.
Run it and see what it reports.
If it doesn't report any issues, that's a good thing.
--- Personally though I wouldn't hesitate installing an SSD anyway.
