Search Box and Cortana Keep Crashing quietly

This is a clean install of Windows 10 Pro x64.
Search box on the taskbar does not work. Clicking on the Search box makes it change color, but it is not possible to type anything into the box.
Opening Start Menu before clicking on the Search box sometimes helps. In 1 case out of 10 Search box suddenly starts working. But it only happens when Start Menu is open. When Start Menu is closed, Search box is unresponsive.
Trying to click on the Search box in such cases generates a barrage of entries in Event Viewer:

    • In Application log, lots of errors like this

    Event 1000, Application Error

Faulting application name: SearchUI.exe, version: 10.0.10240.16401, time stamp: 0x55b1a665

Activation of app Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy!CortanaUI failed with error: The remote procedure call failed. See the Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational log for additional information.

    • In System Log, one error like this

    Event 10010, Distributed COM

The server CortanaUI.AppXd4tad4d57t4wtdbnnmb8v2xtzym8c1n8.mca did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

So, any ideas what could possibly be wrong here?

I made an account specifically to say I'm having the same problem. I also posted on the MS community forums, but haven't had a response.

Same here - weird thing is that Cortana / Search works in a brand new local profile, but when I login to my domain account it doesn't. As a side note, my original domain profile did not survive the Win10 upgrade and I had to copy my old profile on top of it. So, I'm guessing there is something I accidentally over wrote or corrupted. I'm probably going to have to do some digging to find out what it was.

Tried every trick in the book, and I mean EVERY trick. Ended up doing a clean install to resolve.

I have a clean install of Windows 10 Enterprise on two identical laptops for use with a company and both laptops started experiencing this type of issue after being used for an hour or so. The start button won't come up, Edge open and quickly closes and the search box cannot be used. So far haven't found a solution.

Interestingly, Start may be apparently working just fine, yet you still can accrue these errors every time it's clicked. That's the case here. Reports accumulate here, but I don't think they yield any clues:

I ended up installing Windows 10 clean again and this time not applying any Group Policies to it. So far, it has been working fine. It seems some Group Policy was causing an issue.

My later installs of Windows 10 don't seem to exhibit this problem anymore.

However, a few days ago one of my clean installs of Windows 10 Pro x64 (version 1511) developed a problem with Photos app. Every time I tried to open Photos app, it would briefly flash its window and then close instantly. For each such attempt the Event Log would contain an entry, stating that a crash has occured in 'Windows.UI.Xaml.dll'. I just noticed that this is the same DLL module that crashed in this case as well.

Trying to fix the issue with Photos I ran the standard sequence of DISM calls, supplying it with install source. It reported that it fixed something. I rebooted the machine. Immediately after reboot Photos would still crash in exactly the same way. But about 5 minutes later Photos suddenly started to work properly. And it has been working fine ever since.
