Hi kelsej. Welcome to the TenForums @kelsej
Might be a video driver. Have you updated?
What version / build are you on. Right click Start, left click Run, type winver, click okay.
To a command prompt(admin) or Powershell(admin) (right click Start, one will be in list) please run
sfc /scannow
and see if it reports any errors.
If you double click desktop in File Explorer can you add folder? Might be an easy work around.
Ken
Ken, I ran the sfc scan and nothing came back as bad. Windows version is 1809. Yesterday I went back 10 days for a recovery date. Still, when I right click and move the cursor to the New section, the hard drive runs faster and nothing happens.
Can you create in File Explorer?
When is the last time you update video drivers? and what drivers are you using. Some update on their own, I hate that.
Does it do the same in safemode? Also worth trying in File Explorer as Caledon Ken says :)
This is what I believe is happening. File Explorer is crashing when it tries to read a certain item from the Right Click > New context menu.
Can you try this real quick if possible. Open any folder, for example:
C:\Users
C:\Windows
Now minimize that window, Right Click on the Desktop > New.
After the screen flickers, does that minimized window disappear?
Also, can you follow the steps here and confirm that you have:
{D969A300-E7FF-11d0-A93B-00A0C90F2719}
correctly in your Registry?

still working on it. None of the suggestions have fixed the problem yet. I can make a new folder in windows explorer, just not on the desktop.
Lets see if this is somehow a profile issue or the Windows installation.
Would you create another User account, local, and test.
Have you tried the same thing in safemode?
