    File Explorer sort order corrupted/altered

    When I subdivide a video into segments, I end up with clip1.ext, clip2.ext, clip3.ext, clip4.ext, clip5.ext etc.
When I move them to another folder, they appear there as clip5.ext, clip1.ext, clip2.ext, clip3.ext, clip4.ext
If I click on the column heading, they appear as clip5.ext, clip4.ext, clip3.ext, clip2.ext, clip1.ext
If I click on the column heading again, they appear as clip1.ext, clip2.ext, clip3.ext, clip4.ext, clip5.ext
How can I restore the normal ascending sort order as default, and obviate the need to re-sort twice ?

Normal behavior. You actually just need to right click and choose the option and either ascend or descend. Grouping is one option, View with just ascend or descend is another.

    changed sort order

If it is normal, then it should have always been like that, but the 5,1,2,3,4 pattern is something new.

I selected them all, and in VIEW tab, clicked on 'Group by' - then clicking on Ascending or Descending causes no change.

I think the files are appearing in the order copied, similar to when you create a new item in a folder, it appears at the bottom. If the folder template is set to sort by name, you simply need to refresh the view (F5).

Yes. That apparently happens on my end too. Whenever that happens, I would press F5 to refresh the folder, yet I rarely do that whenever I move items to another folder.

    1) If you move the files using the mouse:
After you select all the files you want to move to the next folder, click and drag from the first file, and drag them to the new folder. If you select all the files, and click and drag from the last file, then the ordering in the new folder will be: 5, 1, 2, 3, 4.
If you click and drag from the first file, it will be 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

    2) You can get into the habit that I've developed from noticing this strange thing.
Whenever I select all the files I need to move, I use Ctrl + X (to cut) the files I need to move, then focus on the new folder and press Ctrl + V (to paste).

    Copy order depends on method.

Pepanee - I've confirmed what you have written.
AND it has given me the method to avoid the unwanted sorting .
    Very interesting phenomenon !
And, as I assumed, there was a rational explanation after all.
    Thank you so much.

NOW - HOW to mark the answer as GREAT and the problem as solved ?

    Yes, you're very welcome =)

I agree, it's a kinda strange phenomenon, because when you move the files, you'd expect them to be organized by that new folder's view settings (alphabetically & numerically, in this scenario). But no worries, once you move them to the new folder, the computer will have them sorted correctly the next time you visit the folder. You don't have to refresh the folder or sort columns or whatnot. Assuming you paste them as: 5, 1, 2, 3, 4, and you close the folder, then go back to the folder, it will be sorted correctly: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

In other words, assuming once you do the move and they are shown as 5, 1, 2, 3, 4, there's nothing that you really have to do to make sure they are listed correctly. The next time you visit the folder, they will be shown correctly.

There's a green button, right above the reply section, that you can press to mark this as solved =)
