May W10 Update potential problems ?

    Hello,

Lots of Posts around re a May Update to W10 by MS.

Seems all sorts of nasty things will happen, especially if you have any external HD (perhaps for backups)
    installed. Other problems too, apparently.

And, lots of hints for disabling the automatic backup that MS includes with W10.

Strong suggestions that you should (specifically for this May update).

Not too sharp with this "stuff," but sure sounds "scary".

Any of you folks and experts know anything about this ?
    Something to worry about ?

Not too thrilled about disabling the automatic backups, as I like the idea of Windows Defender being
    periodically updated.

    Suggestions re ?

    Thanks,
    Bob

The next version of Windows, the Features Update to version 1903, was originally pencilled in as the 'April 2019 Update'. Microsoft, no doubt to allay fears that it will have problems like those that beset the first launch of 1809 back in October, have decided to let it spend a month in the Insiders Release Preview ring so that it gets thoroughly tested before release. It has therefore been renamed as the 'May 2019 Update' and is now expected to be release publicly at the end of May.

Microsoft have also released it to MSDN subscribers for testing. The 'May 2019 Update' looks, on the face of it, likely to be the most thoroughly tested of the Windows Features Updates by the time it starts being delivered via Windows Update.

Many TenForum members are Insiders and are already running 1903. Some (like me) are not Insiders, but have also downloaded 1903 and are testing it. So far there seem to be few, if any problems.

But if you still feel that when it is released at the end of May you want to put it off for as long as possible, apparently Microsoft are going to give users more control over how (and when) features updates will be installed.

Download and install now option provides users a separate control to initiate the installation of a feature update on eligible devices with no known key blocking compatibility issues. Users can still “Check for updates” to get monthly quality and security updates....
....This new “download and install” option will also be available for our most popular versions of Windows 10, versions 1803 and 1809, by late May.

Y2K Mania? I got 3 years of work out of it at IBM. We called it the big fizzle

No planes fell from the sky, nothing blew up, trains kept running, cash registers still worked ...

I've been on 1903 now for 2 weeks. No problems at all. I would download the ISO file using UUPDump website right now and upgrade today.

Every large update is "scary" but rarely "terminal". With a clean and well maintained system, I never had bad problems but some bugs are bound to get by. It's inevitable but may not affect everyone. A lot of potential problems can be gleaned from insider builds.
