I've had issues with VM's using sleep/hibernate in the past, and some similar issues in W10 with fast start, but I just use 'restart' for a cold boot if I suspect that's what the issue is.

What would be handy when selecting 'shut down' is if there was an option for fast start / cold boot on next boot or some sort of scheduling so that once a week a cold boot was initiated automatically, overriding fast start.

    Alt+f4, shutdown

Disables both because it also deletes the hiberfil.sys file. That's why I like to use it. Gets rid of a 6.8GB file off my SSD.
Annoyingly offset by the 8GB new virtual disk for updates that you cannot delete even if you turn off its use!

Shift key shutdown does it (a full shutdown when fast startup is enabled so next boot will be a cold one).

Task scheduler can automate a shutdown or restart and cmd line/ batch file desktop shortcuts can be set up for various shutdown states I have since discovered from a bit of judicious Googling.

Just that I am understanding you correctly, are you saying that by deleting hiberfil.sys file we gain maybe 6.6GB but then an 8GB will be created on the same drive?
    I have deleted the
hiberfil.sys file but cannot see the 8GB virtual disk in Disk Management.

If its there it wont show in the top window. you have to scroll down the drive list to see it.
It doesn't show at all on 1809 but it does on 1903.

What happens if you just delete that 8GB partition in v1809 and expand the C: partition to use the free space?

I believe it is virtual, but I'll have to check...delete it? probably be recreated with the next update.
