Edwin, how about a fresh look for context menus? For 8.1, the best they could do was resurrect a look that's older than XP.

    Voice Announcements

Maybe a fresh look for folders!
In that case, MS may as well "go all out" and have different icon sets available (like in Linux Distros).

They could include voice announcements/events packs (like Avast) in addition to the sound/tone events.
Imagine selecting "Restart" and hearing Arnie say "I'll be back."

MS has plenty of money I sure they could afford to pay some money to some celebrities.

Heh, I remember this kind of a thread before 8 came out

First and foremost? ICONS! There needs to be some SERIOUS redesign of desktop icons to tie the visuals of the OS together. Also, how hard is it to give us an option to enable window border translucency like on the taskbar and start menu as well (with StartIsBack)? Right now there are third party themes utilizing Aero but they all aim to look more similar to 7. I want the exact opposite, or rather, the default 8 theme, sharp and flat, but with translucent window borders.

And what is going to become of the Windows Media Player? It hasn't been updated in ages and considering that (Xbox) Music app is going to be windowed in Thershold, what is WMP's future, other than removing it from the OS completely?

Also, I'd love to hear something about File Explorer and that atrocious Ribbon. I mean, seriously.

Still, with a single screenshot and many rumors going around, Threshold sounds like it's gonna develop nicely. I only fear that the Enterprise Preview (or whatever it's called) coming by the end of the month won't give us much of a taste of what has been announced and rumored so far.

I was wondering about this earlier today

I don't mind the Xbox Music App and use it most of the time, but compared to WMP or Zune it is very lacking in features

If it is going to be the default/only player on windows I would like to see more added to it, some type of ratings system and play counts would be nice

Microsoft should really pay close attention to suggestions made in this thread (and others like it) since there are desperately looking for a way to overcome the perceived failure of Windows 8. They should combine all the suggestions made here and other elements into
what-you-see-is-what-you-get theming app so anyone can customize the look of their machine. Naturally this should include at least two premade themes: one that looks like Windows 7 for those businesses that think that a fresh look entails "training costs" and another that goes with the Modern look with some context menus icons that fit in well with the rest of the Modern interface. This way Windows 9 would look different enough from Windows 8 to convince non-expert users that it's indeed "a new Windows".

As far as actual features are concerned, I'd like Microsoft preserve Snapping, even if they completely separate the Desktop interface from the Modern one. What makes snapping so good is that the apps adjust how they display themselves to the available screen space and resolution. Snapping of well-designed apps is the reason I prefer using Modern apps -when they do the job.
