All that is still available on 8.1. Or am I missing something.
    - After about two years of WinDefener/MSE's capture results sliding progressively worse, MS finally came out and said at some point in 2012 that they consider it to only be 'also ran' software, and that consumers should still buy a real antivirus. Most people don't want this, and were previously very happy when Win Defender/MSE was capable, didn't slowdown their systems during updates and scans, and didn't nag them in general.

    - Many people dislike how Windows Live Movie Maker changed the old Windows Movie Maker software.

    - Animating gifs was taken-out in Vista if I remember correctly for the default windows explorer 'windows photo viewer' software, or whatever other names it's had over the past few years. XP's 'Fax and Picture Viewer' worked just fine with animated gifs, but MS decided to cheap-out on paying the liscence for gif files.

    1. The MSE is OK. You can always use other AVs. I use NIS on most systems. Works like a charm.

    2. WLMM is great. The old Movie Maker was a big pile of sh** - extremely poor output quality, few codecs and slow rendering. I do a LOT of video work and can report from experience.

    3. The gif stuff is really a minor detail. There are a several free picture viewers that are better than any MS program.

Reading through this, it sounds just like this, "Why can't they make a better Windows Xp?!"

I dunno. Overall I really like the look of Win8's file explorer, and the under the hood improvements such as the new copy/move file window. And then we have other improvements like pinning items to taskbar or snapping to half the screen etc, I wouldn't want to go too far backwards in terms of OS level desktop/explorer functionality.

I just kindof wish they'd bring-back a few of the features they've dumped over the years per my other post. Such as having the sort columns (name, date modified, size, type) visable in all view types (large icons, thumbnails) instead of just details view; that is another dll hack I have had to use from Vista onwards to hack-in something from XP.

I hope the Windows gods are going to prevent that. We have enough problems as is.

Windows has that, it's called Speech Recognition and does require some training for better accuracy.

But I bet when Windows Phone 8.1 rolls out, the Threshold update for Windows 8.1 will add the Cortana digital assistant to the PC as well.

I should clarify my position a bit. I liked Windows XP a lot. IMO it was a light weight OS that was easy to use. I would be quite content to have a more secure version of it available that would work on newer hardware, without all the bloat that comes with both 7 and 8, which I neither want or need. I would like to see more choices available, rather than a "one shoe fits all" OS. Do I realistically think this will happen? No, but one can dare to dream, can't they?
