    Directory system not showing properly

    Hi

I restored my computer this past weekend and have noticed something odd that I have never seen after a restore. I started moving files and folders back from my back ups and put my websites folder back into MY DOCUMENTS where I keep them stored and they I went to FTP some site files up to my website but filezilla but not showing the right files/folders inside MY DOCUMENTS.

This is what files and folders I see inside MY DOCUMENTS when I view it in filezilla

    • MY PHOTO
    • MY MUSIC
    • MY VIDEOS

So I wrote in their forums about this and after some checking I found some other interesting issues around this. They had me pull up the directory listing in a command prompt for MY DOCUMENTS and this is what I see from the command prompt screen

    Directory system not showing properly-command-prompt.png

Now if I open Windows Explorer and click on DOCUMENTS in the left hand panel this is what I get

    Directory system not showing properly-windoes-explorer1.png

NOTE I have covered over a few personal files in this so there are some additional files in here as well as the folders. That is if I click on DOCUMENTS on the left side as you can see highlighted.

    Now if I instead goto

C:\Users\scott\Documents this is what I get

    Directory system not showing properly-windoes-explorer2.png

NOTE AGAIN in this case nothing is hidden as there is showing nothing in this last screen shot nothing has been hidden for privacy reasons.

So firstly why am I getting different results in all 3 as they should be identical.

Secondly how do I fix this?

Note I have also tried a different FTP program and that one pulls up the proper files and folders.

As for filezilla I have tried to reinstall and no good still calls up the 3 folders indicated at the start no files in the documents folder just those 3 folders (Unsure of those have contents.)

There are at least three issues involved here so there is plenty of scope for misunderstandings.

    1 Junctions
Those junctions are 'sort-of-shortcuts' made using the mklink command. Mklink commands do not just happen of their own accord. Somebody ran those commands.

    2 This PC, Documents
The entry Documents you see in File explorer within This PC is yet another 'sort-of-shortcut', in this case to C:\Users\YourUserName\Documents

    3 User folder locations
Given the results so far, I suggest going to the Registry to check just where your user folders are.
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
Your user folder paths are shown there. 'Personal' means your Documents folder and the others are self-explanatory.

I think this info will clarify some points but will probably also raise new questions.

    Hi Denis

Some are in fact showing for OneDrive. I think when I had it set up I accidentally selected OneDrive by mistake during the setup process when restoring the system. Cause some of these are in fact showing links like below

    C:\Users\scott\OneDrive\Documents

It seems like both Pictures and Documents folders are listed this way where as videos and music are showing as below

    %USERPROFILE%\Music

just wish the normal folder name

If I change the pictures and documents to the same type line as line 2 will this resolve this issue?

Also I posted the below this also is OneDrive connected is there any way to just weed out the OneDrive issues?

    Windows Explorer Status column

Update: I also noticed that the PERSONAL listing in the registry settings is showing a link (like the OneDrive) for DOCUMENTS and there is also one DESKTOP that has same OneDrive link but does go to DESKTOP

    Thanks

Just to be clear these are all the OneDrive links along with the associated name

    {0DDD015D-B06C-45D5-8C4C-F59713854639} - C:\Users\scott\OneDrive\Pictures
    {F42EE2D3-909F-4907-8871-4C22FC0BF756} - C:\Users\scott\OneDrive\Documents
    DESKTOP - C:\Users\scott\OneDrive\Desktop
    MY PICTURES - C:\Users\scott\OneDrive\Pictures
    PERSONAL - C:\Users\scott\OneDrive\Documents

Everything else in the list looks like below regarding how the address is displayed. Just with a different ending name depending on the location

    %USERPROFILE%\Videos

Here is some guidance on removing OneDrive -
Turn off, disable, or uninstall OneDrive - MSOfficeSupport [this is how I did it on my computers - look under the heading Hide or uninstall OneDrive, Uninstall OneDrive]
Uninstall OneDrive - TenForumsTutorials [this is virtually the same as the method I used but it does it through Settings, Apps instead]
Enable or Disable OneDrive Integration - TenForumsTutorials
Add or Remove OneDrive in Navigation Pane of File Explorer - TenForumsTutorials

Make local copies of all your files in OneDrive before uninstalling it [there'd be nothing to stop you going to it online to get them later on but it would be more convenient to do it first].

I think that removing OneDrive will probably resolve most of your issues.
    - The junctions issue would still need to be resolved, unless you already know why those junctions exist.
    - Any remaining issues would at least be easier to understand once OneDrive is out of the way.

    Best of luck,

OK I have tied that and it refuses to uninstall.

I have tried through both settings and control panel and nothing.

In Settles I click uninstall then click the pop up uninstall and then I confirm yes to remove the cursor spins a few times then nothing.

In the CP I tried it but it just spins a few times and then nothing. How the heck do I get rid of OneDrive??? The program is in fact not even running as I turned that off the other day so it does not start at start up any longer

    Dave,

I had no problem uninstalling it so have never had to study it.
    - I also disabled its entry in Task manager [but I think you have done this already judging by, "The program is in fact not even running as I turned that off the other day so it does not start at start up any longer".
    - Perhaps you could ask in Uninstall OneDrive - TenForumsTutorials

I suspect that the problem is that C:\Users\scott\OneDrive\Desktop entry. As long as you make a system image so you can get back to square one if it goes wrong then I'd suggest altering each of those Registry entries that refer to OneDrive.
    - Make sure that the altered paths exist before doing any changes because Windows Registry sulks if you point it to a non-existent path.
    - So, just for example, check in File explorer that the folder C:\Users\scott\Desktop exists.

    Yes, Microsoft did...

They exist because the Windows install put them there. They exist for backward compatibility with software written in the days of XP, because those were the actual folder names back then. If old software is hard-coded to save to the XP default locations the links ensure it ends up in the appropriate W10 one instead.

You're not meant to have noticed them, they are marked with both the Hidden and System attributes so will remain hidden even if you 'show hidden files' in Explorer. You have to show protected system files as well in order to see them.

OK I think the issues resolved. OneDrive did finally remove itself guess just took it's sweet time about doing so. I then fixed the address links in the registry that were still pointing to one drive and then restarted as was having some connection issues with those folders but now those seem fixed as well after the restart as no errors and filezilla is in fact now finding the proper folder.

One thing though I noticed. In windows explorer all seems to be OK

but in filezilla this is what I see

    Directory system not showing properly-untitled2.png

Is there any way to get these 3 out of this folders listing as I don't think they are suppose to be listed there but these 3 have been a problem through out.

Also update on the other thread that TRY3 responded to that now is resolved no more status in windows explorer and no more refresh icons and such and status columns now gone. Thank Goodness!!

Read my post #7 again. They are meant to be there for backward compatibility. Every clean install will have them. If you want to see them in Explorer, as you can in Filezilla, then turn off 'hide protected operating system files'.

@Bree - I am astounded, thanks. I always relocate the individual user folders and had never seen those junctions within C:\Users\YourUserName\Documents [unlike the junctions within C:\Users\YourUserName itself, which I was aware of].
