    File Nomenclature ?

    Hello,

I have some quite old files that I haven't looked at for quite a while, but
would possibly like to use them again.

As i remember, these were.csv files. Radio frequency listings.

But, looking at them now, they appear as, e.g.,

    " Maritime.txt.zycizhj Type ECC "

What is an ECC File, please ?

And what is this zycizhj ? All these files seem to have it.

    Thanks,
    Bob

Usually strange extensions like this ring 'ransomware' alarm bells, but normally they change an extension, not add to the end of one.

I did find this post that has the same .zycizhj.ecc extension, due to copying from a PC to a Mac. The OP seems to have worked out what happened, but unfortunately didn't say what the resolution was in the thread

Have a bunch of photos I copied over from a pc, but can't open them up to see them.
    They have names like: Matthew.JPEG.zycizhj.ecc

If the files have an extension of .zycizhj.ecc you may not see the .ecc bit if you have file extensions hidden in File Explorer. You should tick the box to show 'File name extensions' in the 'View' ribbon of File Explorer. In the absence of any registered app to handle the file extension the file type just says it's a <whatever the extension is> type. So if the extension is .xyz it will show as file type XYZ.

Can you open the .txt.zycizhj.ecc files if you rename them to just .txt ? NB: you'll have to turn on show file name extension in order to be able to do this.

I found this: https://fileinfo.com/extension/ecc . Not much help but may explain what the .ECC files are.
