In File Explorer Highlight and Leave Active ONLY The File Name Itself

In File Explorer in Windows 10 I want to have inactive white space to the right of file/folder names. And I want it globally. What I mean is this:

I do not want to have the area to the right of a file or folder name to be active like it presently is. Presently the area to the right of any file/folder name is highlighted when I hover over that area, and it is thus an active area, where clicking there opens the file or folder to the left (I use single-click functionality). And that area to the right of any file/folder name is active for the full width of the longest file/folder name in that column in that window. I don't want the area to the right of file/folder names to be active like that at all.

In short, and using a specific example, where the blue highlighting in the image below is blue all the way across the line on which the "Documents" text file appears (the blue highlighting being as wide as the folder titled "Backup of My Documents Folder" at the top of that column), I'd like that area to the right of the file name itself to be, instead, inactive and solely white (empty) space (where clicking there does nothing other than to unselect items that otherwise might be highlighted).

Stated differently, if I were to click where the mouse hand icon appears in the below image, I want that to be inactive white space that does not open the file to its left.

How do I configure Windows 10 to set up that as a default, universal behavior? (You're speaking to a dummy here; I'll need step-by-step guidance). Thank you in advance!

Disable full row select - Windows 10 Forums

Hi, note issues consequent on doing this.

There may be other ways... e.g. you can try this (free) - take due precautions - don't rely on System Restore:

    Did not work

Ultimate Windows Tweaker 4.5 was downloaded and installed and the feature was tried a few times (with a reboot each time) but it did not solve the problem.

    Thank you for your reply.

This is the sort of thing that changes over time as Windows evolves. There is the thread I quoted in my previous post too.

I looked at that thread and did not feel confident it applied anymore (seemed a little early).

I love the passive voice you used ("changes over time"). As we all know it is Microsoft, by active steps, that makes the changes over time. And almost universally the features that enhance efficiency are degraded.

The phrase you use ("as Windows evolves") can easily be accompanied by an "other-side-of-the-coin" description: "as Windows devolves." They should make all the changes they want but always leave open the ability to not accept changes.

A simple program feature could be part of every "update" that (1) describes changed features, (2) shows examples of the feature as it appeared or functioned prior to the change and as it will appear in the "update," and (3) gives users the simple one-click opportunity to accept or reject the new feature/function.

    IMHO.

Ok here's another that doesn't work... by someone who's normally ultra-reliable:

    how?

    - using Qttabbar by Quizo (free) - which I also use to add tabs to explorer and colour backgrounds etc.

Agreed- the one area I fear most is MS moving settings from the Control Panel. Here they have lost features in some cases. Plus with Win 7 they essentially kept the same spec. Now, they don't- so a much greater risk of unexpected bugs.

Some of the prevalent reg tweaks don't work with dark Explorer, with Explorer set to light, it seems fine.

As @dalchina alluded to, QTTabBar is a great alternative for many features that seem to be depreciating on an almost weekly basis!

This used to work in Windows 7: How to Disable Full Row Select in Explorer in Windows 7

Don't know if it will work in Win 10 or not. Create a System Restore point and maybe a Macrium Backup and give it a try or better yet, use Sandbox in one of the 1835x builds, then when you exit Sandbox, everything goes back to the way it was

Edit: There is a vbscript file included (two actually) written in 2016 to disable full row select and auto arrange in explorer and restore default settings. I'll give it a try once the current Insider 18358.1 update in installed in my Oracle VM and IO can safely reboot/

@Edwin- how does dark explorer look with Qttabbar's tweak? (Assuming the reg tweak you're referring to isn't Qttabbar's approach...)
