    Dying laptop

Good evening to all,Hope someone can give me some advice.
I have a dying hp laptop been having small problems very often. Have done a complete windows reset for the third time beginning of the week
so decided to go and get another newer model.
don't use it for any hard work just shopping banking usual daily chores.
Been looking at a chrome book.Does a chrome book allow me to put printer software etc,
or any good suggestions for a newer laptop been looking in Amazon loads of laptops there, looking at it a nice 13ins screen with a. ssd for the main drive. As now I have all my documents etc on an external ssd that works well.
    Thanks

The "My Computer" section displays Acer.

Please update the specs in the "My Computer" section:

System Specs - Fill in at Ten Forums | Tutorials
In the left corner below in your post you find 'My System Specs'.
After clicking it you can find a link a little below that says 'Update your System Spec', click on this link to get to the page where you can fill in your system specs.
System Info - See Your System Specs - Windows 7 Help Forums

Include PSU. cooler, case, peripherals and anything attached to the computer by wired or wireless (mouse, keyboard, headset, printer, xbox, USB wireless network card, etc.)

This is for the HP notebook:

    1) Download and install HP Diagnostics Windows:
HP PC Hardware Diagnostics | HP® Official Site

    2) Launch the application

    3) Click system tests > system extensive test > run once (run the test overnight)

    4) View the results in the AM.
Some of the component tests are interactive.
Run any test to further evaluate any of the problems that you are having with the computer.

    5) The HP Windows diagnostics should check most of the major hardware components with the exception of RAM.
To test RAM power on the computer and repetitively click the F2 key to open the HP UEFI diagnostics > run the RAM testing overnight.

If there is a failure on any of the tests it typically displays the problem. If not, then the error code is posted.
If there are no hardware problems then you can check windows, drivers, etc.

Chrome books are basically a Android phone so you only run Android apps but you can get most things like ms word Photoshop etc they last about 10 hours on battery

    Hi, dafydd.

You can get a decent overview of laptops here: LappyList - The Free Laptop Buying Guide and Comparison Tool

It's not the be all and end all of laptop reviews but you may find it a way to set your focus. Note, select the class of laptop you're interested in first. This is were I've gone to reduce the clutter in my head after going blind at Amazon.

    Looks nice.

You're paying a premium for thin and light, though. Is that what you want?

If I translate that to US $660 or so, I can see yes a little pricey for use you describe unless, as bobkn asks, that thin and light are a value for you.

    Also note -

    albeit a bit pricier.

If a laptop costs less than $1000 ...
    or
If a laptop is marketed as "home" or "home" office" ...
... then it's junk. You're wasting your money.

You can waste $400. Or $600. Or $800. It's waste.

If you must spend under $1000, buy a desktop.
If you must have a laptop, buy one listed as a "business laptop". You'll spend $1000 or more.
These are better performing and (more importantly) better built.

Agreed, they're built like tanks. Though you can get them for less if you get a refurbished one. Dell for example sell a Latitude E7270 in the UK for 659 ($875 at current rates).

    Dell Latitude 12 7000 Series (E7270)
    • Display: 12.5" HD (1366 x 768)
    • Processor: Intel Core i5 (i5-6300U) 2.40 GHz
    • Memory: 4 GB
    • Hard Drive: 256 GB
    • OS: 64-bit Windows 10 Pro
Dell Refurbished Dell Latitude 12 7000 Series (E7270)

Though if you are prepared to risk buying used, you can pick up real bargains. I recently bought a higher spec E7270 from CashConverters (16GB, i7, full HD touch screen) for around 320 ($425). Mind you, I had to clean-install Windows 10 myself (easy, as it had the 10 Pro key in its bios).
