    view source of html file

A few yeas ago I took an online course
on html4. When I would make a file that would take me to a website I
was able to view source to look at how it was made by viewing the
various tags etc. I don't remember how I was able to do the view
source, but I remember that I opened it and could edit it and make
some changes. Lately I've made a few more links but I can not open
and edit them. When ever I double click or click on Open it worked. I
think that's how I used to edit them and change all the tags etc. I
can't do that any more. It used to be so simple.

A right click in an empty space of the page in browser, gives options of view source, and inspect element, at least that is in Edge. Fn + F12 brings up the console.

    Same in Firefox

Could you be thinking of MS Frontpage?
Microsoft FrontPage (full name Microsoft Office FrontPage) was a WYSIWYG HTML editor and website administration tool from Microsoft for the Microsoft Windows line of operating systems. It was branded as part of the Microsoft Office suite from 1997 to 2003.

Initial release: November 1995; 23 years ago ...

There are plenty of HTML editors... options like this, too:

Thank you..If I right click on an empty
space, it does give me the option to “view source” so I can see
everything as I had done before. But, I must still be missing
something because before I could edit everything and I could
copy/paste/delete what I didn't want and insert the correct text or
tags. As it is now I can view what's in there but can do nothing else
to it. What am I missing? Thanks, Frank
