@jcMactintosh - thyan has already done a clean install. I believe you are referring to an 'in-place upgrade repair install' which was suggested in posts #3,#6.

It seems the damage was too substantial to be able to do that- nothing would run properly.

@ Thyan: At this time we still haven't seen the result of checking the disk, ao recommend you do that early on.
Before installing a whole batch of programs, your priority should be your first disk image.

What I do is to keep a simple text record of changes: Create a base image, note that, make various changes, noting that, and at a suitable point or time create a differential image, note that, and continue..

Then if something goes wrong, it's relatively quick to restore an image, then redo the changes. Helps with diagnosing problems too.

    Funny story ...
Many years ago (with Windows 2000) I had a similar problem.
Task Manager would not run. When I tried to run it all I'd get was a "flash". The window came up and immediately closed.
    Regedit behaved the same way.

The cause: a virus. It was "protecting" itself by looking for a running taskmgr or regedit ... and killing it as soon as it appeared.
Fortunately I had pstools installed. I ran pslist from a dos prompt and found a suspicious program. It had a squirrely name, something like qb95rhd.
So I killed it. Then I was able to run task manager and regedit.

I used the latter to find an entry in HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run that would start that squirrely program every time I logged on.
It gave me the folder location of the program . So I removed the program and its registry entry.
    Solved.

I wonder whether the OP's problem is something similar?

Hi guys... I did not have much time in the past days to take care of the computer... I ran chkdsk and gave me 0 bad sectors. :). I'm having a different problem now, but it's off topic here and I'll search the forum for a solution. If I don't find it, I'll open a new thread ...

    Hi Thyan
You can try to repair system files of Windows by use the "program-image-health".
It uses windows "Dism" commands to "fix" your system, it is simple to use ...

Download the image-health_17.01.05.7z file (Thank to Kyhi) ...

Once in your PC, unzip it by clicking 2 times on it and then extract it where you want (on the desktop, it's easier to find later), it will create a folder "image-health_17.01.05"...

(If you are having trouble decompressing the file, you will find 7zip totally free for almost all the compressed files in Windows.)

Open the folder creates and launch "ImageHealth.cmd", accept by "Yes" to "Admin access" then Choose the 3 options for the minimal, more if you want.
    1) Option 1, wait the end (while take some times )
    2) Option 2, wait until the end...
    3) Option 5, wait until the end...
    4) Restart your computer.

You can use the same program for SFC then choosing the Option 7.

Is this the last valid version? Is it still working well and works well after Montly Rollups are installed (esp on Win 8.1)?

    Hi xbliss
Some DISM commands are not identical for Win10 and Win7 or 8 ...
To try them involves no risk (the command fails, that's all...) You can edit the "cmd" file to see the complete cmd and adapt it if necessary !!
Other cmd included have no effect on Win8.x
    Others are "universal"...
This is the last version known to me, Kyhi has not updated since, to my knowledge, but the DISM cmd have not evolved in the meantime !
See DISM cmd by Microsoft here...

[SOLVED] I just stomped with the same problem in Win 7. The error message seemed related to how Windows launched the program, so I searched the registry for taskmgr.exe (used NirSoft's RegScanner to speed up the search) and found it in the key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\taskmgr.exe with two subkeys.

Thinking it could be bad configured, renamed the main key in regedit to taskmgr2.exe (to easily restore it if caused problems or if don't work), and without restarting could finally launch the Task Manager right clicking on the task bar. I intend to look in another working system to check which value should have that key or if it could be deleted.

Before this I tried sfc /scannow solution with no success. Then copied the executable to another directory, run it and it worked, so I concluded the executable file was ok, and the launching was somehow bad, and fortunately the key renaming fixed it (effectively erasing references to the executable in Exec Options).

Hope this workaround fix the problem for others.

    Regards,
    Fjor
