Playing MP4 gives "Package could not be registered"

I get the above error when I try to open a MP4 video file. It plays ok with VLC Player. I cannot set the default video player - it shows "Films and TV". If I try to click on VLC, it does not do anything.

Do I need to "Repair" the Windows 10? If so, what is the best way please?

    Welcome to TenForums @devdeep60

The 'Package could not be registered' error may be fixed by reinstalling and re-registering 'Films & TV'. See this tutorial.

Reinstall and Re-register Apps in Windows 10 | Tutorials

Note that it calls it 'Movies & TV' in the tutorial. Don't worry, it's the same thing. It's called 'Films &TV' in a UK install of Windows 10.

What version does Winver say you have? There were known problems in both 1803 and 1809 in setting default apps, but those were fixed in recent cumulative updates. For 1809 it was fixed in build 17763.168 and for 1803 in build 17134.441.

If you are on a lower build number then make sure you are up to date by clicking 'Check for updates' in Settings > Update & Security > Windows update. Note that doing so in 1803 may well also get you the 'Features update to Windows 10, version 1809'. If you'd prefer to stay on 1803, then download and install the standalone package for the latest cumulative update from the Update Catalog, links can be found in this post:

Great! Which fix did it for you, was it re-registering Films & TV?
