The Run history is not retained a search led me to a post which informed that "Show most used apps" in Settings\Personalization should be enabled. In my case, this slider is greyed out and is not accessible.

Freebooter, thanks but controls mentioned do not exist under the same name and menus of Settings.

Let Windows track app launches to improve Start and search results. and Show most used apps are disabled (greyed out) in release 1809.

Is there anyone here who has a newly installed Windows 10 Pro 1809 (not an update) where both controls are greyed out?

I have a clean install of 1809 Pro in a VM. Neither are greyed out by default.

However, I can grey them out if I wish, there's a group policy for that. Do those two pages also say *some settings are hidden or managed by your organisation?

If so, then look in gpedit and see if the 'Remove frequent programs list from the Start Menu' policy is enabled. If it is, set it to 'Not configured'.

Bree, thanks for the reply, unfortunately both controls are still disabled. In the Local Computer Group policy "Remove frequent programs list from the Start Menu" in both the Computer Configuration and User Configuration are "Not configured,"

Try enabling the policy, then disabling it again. That should set then reset any relevant registry settings and may help.

I did what you suggested which is sound advice, and rebooted between the change. Also tried "disabled" as well and nothing changed. I will search for the relevant registry keys first.

FWIW I have Show the most used apps off (default) and Run history is retained (+ after a restart).

    Run history is here:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RunMRU
    Try:

Run command not saving History in Windows 10

This is what you've seen, I guess:
