Photo Rotation | Portriat orientation in photo and on monitor screen

    I am photographing 8 x 11.5 documents using a copy stand.
I have the camera set for portrait orientation.
I have also have my monitor set in portrait orientation.
The photos only render in landscape.

The Windows Photo Viewer does not allow me to view the series in portrait.

I am looking for a simple and free app that will allow me to set the frame for flipping through the images in portrait without having to re-orientate them every frame. Read them like a reading book in other words.

I took a quick look at XnView and Vueprint. Both are pricey and way overkill for what I seek to do.

    Any thoughts? Solutions?

PS. I thought to check the camera settings: they are fixed at 640 x 480 without any obvious way to change the aspect ratio at any resolution level. So it seems like software is the only way to get to where I want to go?

    Hi Mike

    Maybe irFanView.

Click on Options, then Properties / Setting, under JPG there is an Auto Rotate that you can disable.

Thanks for the info Ken. I downloaded and installed irFanView.

I joined the forum but I cannot figure out how to post a question there.

Are you a member? Figured out how to post a question?

First question is how to tag a batch for processing

I looks like File>Batch Conversion gets me to where I want to go

But alas I am out of time right now to take it any further.

Do you have any experience with this track? Any suggestions from there?

    Thanks.

Hi, Ken seems to be out now,

I tried irfanview a long time ago and it does seem complicated, try gimp when you have the time. Anyways, it should be like any other selection process select the first one then use shift or control to select the others.

You sure about xnview? I have the free version and it has rotational tools.

Sorry never really got into anything complicated with irfanview. Just like that it shows pictures quickly and allows me to scan through a folder.

While you want to do some things with it did it stop the rotation you were experiencing?

In Irfanvew, if the image exif has info about orientation, then in Options > Properties > JPG/PCD/GIF set Auto rotate according to exif info (if available).

If you want a rotated 'view' only, click the L or R keys on the keyboard.

Or if you want to batch convert, File > Batch Conversion > Click "Advanced" Button > Click on Rotate Left or Rotate Right -also set other options you want and click OK or to save the settings click the save preferences for using the same options in future. Then back in the Batch Conversions dialog, in "Output Directory for Results files" select a target folder (different from the Source). Then select the files you want converted from the files listing showing in the "Batch Conversion " dialog box (to start with experiment using a couple of images). Then click the "Start Batch" button.

Also note that XnView is free for personal use.
