How To Fix MMC Error "detected error in snap in..." ?

I am trying to disable Cortana.

In the GPE I go to edit "Cortana" and I get a message that MMC has detected an error in a snap-in.

Found a fix on the web that involved adding to the system path.

    But it hasn't worked.

    Anyone got any ideas? hopefully.......

Hi, can you confirm you have Win 10 Pro?

I don't bother disabling Cortana and I'm never bothered by it.
    a. I disable the search bar on the taskbar
    b. I make sure 'Hey cortana' is disabled in Settings. This reduces RAM usage significantly - to 2-3Mb, and CPU background use slightly as it hints.

Is there really a need to do more?

    Yes I have 10 Pro.

I don't know if there's a need to disable Cortana or not.

I just know I have hassles down there at and around that search bar and cortana is intimately involved.

Because if I put the cursor in the search field a big black rectangle pops up with a Cortana message at the top - and characters do not appear in the seaarch field, I cannot write in it. And if I try it othertimes, such as right now as writing this, then that rectangle pops up again but in white this time, background white, without any writing in there at all, but opaque so's I can't see this post as I'm writing it in that area of the screen.

So I'm trying to come to grips with that somehow. That's how Cortana gets involved. It just appears to be involved. I have no other interest in it.

I don't know about 'hey cortana' disabling in settings - is that not the same as the disabling of Cortana that I'm trying to do?

Now this other issue has arisen which I'd like to know about and not just forget or skirt over: something wrong that MMC says there's an error in a snapin.

I've done the DISM restore health followed by sfc scannow and they've apparently not fixed things.

Sounds like your system would benefit from an in-place upgrade repair install as you have several symptoms.
That keeps all progs and data and most settings. You need an iso of the same build and base language.

    Tutorial available.

It simply means Cortana won't respond to... yes... you guessed it ... you saying 'Hey Cortana'.

I would prefer to fix the snap in error rather than repair install, but I do have a question about the repair install. I currently have version 1903 if I do a repair will that stay at 1903 or revert to an older version?

Do you have 1903? Cortana and Search have been completely separated in 1903. You'll only get that Cortana message if you click on the Cortana button (the circle). That's not Search any more (as it was in 1809), for Search you need to click the new magnifying glass icon.

If you don't see a Search icon (or Search box) then you need to turn it on, right-click on the taskbar to do that. While you're there, you can turn off the Cortana button too.

For a repair install you use an iso of the same base build, language and 'bitness'.

It is not feasible to go back a build that way even if you used an 1809 iso- just wouldn't work and it would tell you so.

    Thanks for your answer

The reason I ask is data limit, downloading large updates or especially an iso takes up too much of my data, I guess I will continue to look for an answer to actually fix the problem with MMC snap-in error.
    Thanks for your help.

Sounds like you will not be able to ever do a build update (feature update).

You can get an iso using someone else's PC, but you would face a large update subsequently.

Lacking the GP editor option you can use the reg file in the tutorial meanwhile:
