So .. my existing system is running on the current SSD in the single M.2 slot on the laptop. If I remove that drive - then the system will not boot. I only have a single M.2 slot on my laptop. I am trying to upgrade the SSD in that slot (running the operating system) to a new, much larger SSD.

This is why I am trying to move my existing operating system to the HDD on the laptop and boot from that. Then I can remove the existing SSD, install the new Evo 970 SSD, install the driver, copy back the operating system to that new SSD, then finally change the boot order back to boot off of the new, upgraded SSD.
Sounds like a plan to me. Hope you have enough room on your HD to make a partition large enough to migrate system there first.

Still not sure if you need that driver at all.

He already has the OS partition on the hard drive. He just needs to create a system partition on the hard drive to boot from. Then ocne booted into the hard drive, he could install the new SSD and use the Samsung software to move the OS and system partitions to the SSD.

Yes, of course. He can switch active system later but only temporary system will have drivers installed.

Didn't Kari wrote recently something about injecting drivers into system images?

You can't boot from the hard drive because you don't have a system partition on it
You cloned the C: drive but you did not clone the Hidden small 260 MB FAT32 EFI partition in front of the C: Partition. This has the boot files on it. And to be safe, I would also include Hidden 16 MB partition next to that, if you want the drive to boot correctly. If you don't want to do that, As been stated, you can create those partitions, but it would be easier to just clone the whole Disk again.

    Thank you for support

    Folks,

I have not quite solved this yet - but thank you for all of your support and ideas. I think I can see where I went wrong .. failing to copy that first partition.

I am also wondering, given the comments, if I was given the right information by Samsung about that driver being required.

So I am going to loop around again and try to copy the complete original SSD to my new Evo 970 and see if I can make it work.
