    wofcompresseddata - make it stop!


    I get a ton of hard drive activity and checking resource monitor, it lists tons of files being accessed by wofcompresseddata. What is this and why is it always running?

    This has been reported before some time ago. Maybe something in this thread may help. Seems to have to do with compressed files, and if so, the system will decompress first temporarily to access.

    Unfortunately, there was never any explanation or solution, and the thread died. I really wish I knew what these wofcompresseddata files were.

    Well following the links in the above link, I'm thinking that at some point a major update changed the status of OS files to compressed.

    I opened an elevated command prompt and ran:
    compact /compactos:query
    and got:
    The system is in the compact state

    I then ran:
    compact /compactos:never

    And after running for about 15-20 minutes, it said:
    Completed uncompressing OS binaries.

    So I'm wondering if the wofcompresseddata listing I've been seeing when files are accessed in resource monitor is due to these files being compressed? I'll see how it goes now and if I notice this going forward. This might improve performance a bit too now that they are uncompressed.

    I wonder how windows determines your files need to be compressed???

    I ran the command you gave above and it says;

    Code:
    The system is not in the Compact state because Windows has determined that, it
is not beneficial for this system.

    Well my main drive is currently rather low in space due to a project filling it up, but it's just temporary. Windows probably didn't like seeing the drive space getting low (about 40GB left).
